The cigarbox is dedicated to an English folklore character Spring-Heeled Jack, humanoid creature famous for his extraordinary high jumping skills. First records of people seeing Spring-Heeled Jack in London go back to 1837. Later records tell that had been seen in other places in England, especially in London and its suburbs, Liverpool, Sheffield, Midlands (central England), as well as in Scotland. Most of the records are dated to 1850-1880, the last date is considered to be 1904.
His history has still no explanation, science doesn’t have any evidence of the equipment that helped Jack jump so high. The city legend of Spring-Heeled Jack was unbelievably famous in England in second half of the 19th century – first of all, due to the unusual appearance, aggressive and eccentric behavior (Jack used to attack people) and his ability to jump so very high.
The story of Spring-Heeled Jack had a great influence on comics culture in 20th century, particularly his outfit became a prototype of a “superhero (or supervillain) costume”. Also, this is the only “intellectual mystical creature” in human history, whose “case” was being discussed at the level of governmental institution, which claimed it to be real. Was it the devil himself, an alien from other worlds or an eccentric inventor is still unclear…
