Deserved win today and our first clean sheet of the season. Starting off strong we dominated the midfield and kept our shape well. With some great passing football linking together the midfield and defence, it wasn’t long before our opponents opened up and Ben Beddoes started the scoring.
MatCats were punished for their high line and apparent lack of understanding of the offside rule with Ben’s first goal of the season, embarrassing the other team.
Runs from Ben, Billy, Chris and Jonny were almost always rewarded with some kind of opportunity and it wasn’t long before Ben was through on goal once again and scoring his second. Coming back from injury in full force, Ben joins the exclusive group of Physoc top scorers for a second year running. Already this has been described as the best football any team has ever played but we knew we had to stay switched on after the result the previous week.
The constant pressure was wearing the old boys down, MatCats had an average age of 46 and their fitness was beginning to show. Billy cut through their defence once again, lobbing the keeper from range with an arcing shot to only be denied by the cross bar. We continued to make attempts on goal but as the game progressed we lost our shape and allowed them to press us, keep possession and have a few chances. Luckily our defence held strong with Matt Clarke and Matt Browning holding their own as centre backs, ruling out any chance of them getting back into the game. Nick Skouros swept up any loose balls well as keeper but ultimately was left with very little to do.
Just before the end of half time Physoc were robbed, this time their lack of understanding for the offside rule played in their favour when Billy ran through their defence past one of their centre backs and scored past the keeper. Despite running from a deeply onside position, to the disgust of everyone in the stands, it was brought back long after the goal for Billy being offside. ... #football #universityofsouthampton #uniofsouthampton #unifootball #soccer
