Free can mean so many things, especially in a capitalist driven society.
It’s difficult to restrain our suspicions of free because we’ve been taught that “nothing is free”. Or perhaps most things that are free are “free with strings attached” a kind of seemly free that might jerk you by the ankles unexpectedly when you try to enjoy them.
Sometimes free means you can participate, free means you’re not exasperated by the confines of money and the circles it affords you to stand in. Freedom to be included.
I think providing something for free is a gift, one that you are paying forward with no expectations for returns but knowing that giving such freedom is an act of paying forward and anyone practiced in giving will know it is freedom of its own to give.
I felt so lucky to find this set of esky and umbrella for ‘free’ on the side of the road.
It seemed so lucky that they were in my husband’s and my favourite colours. Both items were in pristine condition with the tags from the 60’s still in tact and the esky was still in its box(the box wasn’t in awesome condition though). It seemed perfect to take them along to King Edward park for their first outing, pack our own lunch with re-usable items and enjoy the free use of a public space.
Furthermore we were surrounded by people celebrating the magical moments in life, like the eminent birth of a mother, a marriage of lovers and a coming of age tween party.
I felt lucky again to be healthy and able to provide a gift of play to the @newcastlefireandflow community and restore the balance of giving forward.
Maintaining balance and persistence in the face of adversity is what drew me to this game of hoop balance building.
I relish the moment of tumbling it all down, reminding me that nothing is permanent unless to work to defend it.
Working to defend community spaces is a blossoming passion of mine and I’m learning more about the freedom of gifting forward.
Celebrating life and community and seeing the value in the vintage and leaving no trace.
Perfect Saturday to play.
