Post office renamed for former Councilmember Michels
Consider it the Michels Mail House now.
A local post office has been renamed to honor an iconic former City Councilmember.
In a ceremony on Sat., Aug. 11 hosted by Congressman Adriano Espaillat, the United States Postal Service (USPS) branch located on 4558 Broadway was renamed for Stanley Michels, who represented the district in the City Council from 1978 through 2001.
During the 115th Congress, Espaillat and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand introduced bicameral bills to designate the USPS facility as the Stanley Michels Post Office Building. “In many ways, Stanley was ahead of his time,” Espaillat said at a July Congressional hearing to introduce the bill.
During his seven-term tenure, Michels made significant contributions to environmental reform in New York City, such as sponsoring of the Clean Indoor Air Act, the city’s first law regulating smoking in public places.
In 1982, he sponsored Local Law I, the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act, making the presence of peeling lead-based paint in apartments housing children under six years old one of the most serious violations of the city housing code.
