From 1948 till 1990 Berlin was separated into 2 parts, East and West-Berlin.
In 1961, shortly before the Berlin wall was put up, JFK gave the order for 3 American Checkpoints to be built to allow access for military and foreign personnel.
One of the most famous checkpoints, was Checkpoint C or Checkpoint Charlie, which was built on Friedrichstraße.
It became famous, because many Germans fled over this exact checkpoint.
When the Berlin wall came down on June 22 1990, the Allied guard house was closed.
The guardhouse, which you can see in the picture is actually a replica, the original guardhouse is now in the Allied museum in Zehlendorf.
In the last comments, I read that a lot of you have visited Berlin before.
My question is, have you also been to checkpoint Charlie or the East Side Gallery?
Tell me your answer in the comments.
