Honey bee enjoying the fennel flowers 😍 the summer garden is slowly starting to produce - the first lot of cherry tomatoes are close, a few cucumbers are ready to harvest, squash is long over due, zucchini are growing and the first mini capsicums and eggplants. An abundance of berries are ripening and the fruit on the fruit trees is relatively safe from the birds so far. The garden is full of flowers and handling the up and down weather pretty well. Not to speak too soon but so far the garden seems to be doing a lot better than it did last summer so fingers crossed it continues to do so!

Sunshine in a bottle. The calendula flowers I had picked and popped in a bowl had finally dried so I popped them in some sunflower oil to make a calendula oil. Ill let this sit for a few weeks then strain it out. I’ll try it as a salad dressing but also will make some healing salves with it.

I decided to do an experiment to see how the potatoes crop in pots/grow bags compared to in veggie beds. I harvested the potatoes that were grown in pots and grow bags this morning and this is the outcome as expected not as much as I usually get from in ground/ veggie beds but when your running out of real estate you can still get a decent amount from using pots 👌

🥑 TROPICAL FRUITS 🍌 I figured I'd bring you all a bit of a break from the cold and bleary winter with a selection of rare, exotic fruits from my friends at @miamifruit. You may remember them from my "World's Longest Avocado" video.

They sent out a holiday box (December 15th is latest you can order to get a box before Christmas) of some truly EPIC fruits: longans, rambutans, chocolate sapote, egg fruit, soursop, sugar apple, ice cream bananas, cacao seed pod...the list goes on.

I grew baby carrots!! My first carrot harvest ever. Also I’m very impatient, and these could be bigger carrots. Though, they are meant for either (they’re Mokum F1 carrots from @johnnys_seeds ). This surprise broccoli! Whaaatt!!

Oh my goodness I haven't paid too close attention to my front garden because I usually leave out the back door and it's usually dark when I leave and come back home (that's winter in Seattle for ya).
This broccoli was planted back in May, a little too closely together and got swarmed by aphids, and so it didn't really produce much. For some reason, I pulled the rest of the plants except this one, and heyo!! Look at me now!!

Checking on the garden today. We have been in the 40s so I’ve had them uncovered. I noticed my garlic is coming up which I’m not sure that’s ok as we will likely drop again into the 20s. I bought my husband a wood lathe for Christmas which comes with the bonus of endless wood shavings. I put a bucket of them on my beds, focusing on mulching the garlic with them. Good idea? I’m a garlic growing newb so any advice on whether they should be emerging here in the PNW is appreciated. They didn’t seem to like the last cold snap we had which is the reason for my concern. I’m also hoping the slugs will hate the wood shavings and stay away from my greens 🤞🏼😁 Thoughts?

Dark Galaxy from @wildboarfarms ... WOW, right? I planted this for the first time last season & my plants were very prolific. They were uniform but small in size. This year I got much larger fruit & had some interesting shapes & catfacing too. I don't know if I'm weird or not (I am), but I do like non-uniform maters. Tis the citrus season... my first ripe tangerine and it’s beautiful! Sweet, juicy and everything wonderful. Last year our tree was LOADED!! This year, not so much. With some plants, I dont even know why I bother... Here are the purple brussel sprouts that I started from seed back in March. I dont like eating brusselsprouts very much, but they look so fun, that I keep trying them in the garden. But i just never have any luck with them. They get covered with aphids and never bulb up. I couldn't resist these purple ones because they sounded so cool. But they really haven't done much, and at this point, i think i can safely say that there will not be purple brusselsprouts for Christmas.

Growing milkweed for monarchs is great but be sure to cut it back in fall. This photo is from last February during an especially cold week. Cutting back your milkweed reduces disease in the monarch populations and encourages them to move onto warmer locations before the cold sets in. Unfortunately this little guy hung around longer than he should 😞🧡

Aside from looking at my weather app to tell me when cooler weather is headed my way, my camellia tree has always been very reliable. As soon as I notice flower buds, then I know the season is changing, because it never blooms when the weather is warm or hot. It survives many frost & freezes, and outlasted the mums. You can say it’s the 👑 of the flower beds for now; atleast, until the daffodils & tulips come along.

These chives line the edge of our keyhole raised beds. I got tired of weeding the gap between our raised beds and the pavers so I planted garlic chives every 5-6 inches where ever there was space. And so needless to say there’s no shortage of garlic chives at any time of the year for us here. These here I chopped up and made frittata. Our girls will not eat chives or eggs individually but will eat both when I make it this way. We’ve been struggling with male ZUCCHINI flowers in the last week

The phenomenon is hard to explain however the unseasonably cold days we experienced this week was unusual and may have had an impact on the development of the male flowers

Will willpower win? Taking bets now. While this is my current garden view, when I close my eyes, it looks very different🤩 Tis the season to pack away garden reality, and bask in the dream...where everything grows perfectly, harvests bountifully, blooms prolifically and pests/disease are unknown. Garden nirvana!

So, I now have collected 5 seed catalogs...all of whom I haven’t dared yet to open (a never before achieved feat). Right now, my garden plan for next year is sensible, based in fact, conservative (me conservative, which means it’s still a lot), and fairly achievable. As soon as I crack open that first catalog, this plan of reason will immediately fly out the window in exchange for wild and reckless abandon and the rally cry of “Buy it all!!!!!”🤪. Anyone willing to wager if reason and rational will win?💙

Back in April I went out to a client's house to help her make a plan for how to transform her front yard into a garden that could supply all her needs.
She had a large yard with a couple of beds and LOTS of cheery trees from the previous owner. She wanted to use the space more efficiently and be able to grow lots of her own produce.
I went back out to help with a redesign for a blueberry patch and basic Q&A. I was so happy to see all the work she has been doing.
Is it done? No! Gardens like this don't just happen over night. It is a slow transformation, especially when doing the work yourself and having a family.
I am so proud of all the hard work she is putting in and can't wait to go back out in a few months to see everything she has moved and changed up.

Daisy and Miss Leggs are little food gremlins, while our pretentious hens, Goldie and Sweet Pea, stand back and watch in either disgust or confusion about if they should get in on the action. 🌱This time of year their bodies are working extra hard to stay warm, lay eggs, and grow new feathers so I try to supplement their diet with things like corn and oatmeal on colder days and greens in between. They’ve also been getting a little extra grubs lately for protein since the pretentious bunch is molting.🌱 Although I worry about these ladies this time of year, they’re fairly unfazed and happy to keep going about their business. #playingwithmud #nickischickies .

Had to do some research today to learn what's going wrong with these carrots.
Why Carrots Crack If your carrots are cracking, the malady is likely the result of inadequate environmental preferences; water needs to be exact. Carrot roots need moist soil, but don’t like to be waterlogged. Moisture stress not only results in cracking in carrot crops, but may also cause underdeveloped, woody, and bitter roots. The cracking of the roots occurs after a time of a lack of irrigation and then a sudden onslaught of moisture, such as a downpour after a period of drought.
How to Prevent Cracking in Carrots
Along with consistent moisture, growing the perfect, or almost perfect, carrot also requires healthy, well-draining soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5.
What Causes Deformities in Carrots?
The appearance of stunted and split carrots typically has the gardener wondering what causes deformities in carrots. Deformed carrots are not only caused by poor soil but may also be from the activities of root knot nematodes or a disease called Phytoplasma aster. Nematodes are nearly invisible soil organisms with feeding activity that can cause nodules to form on plant roots. Since the carrot is the main root of the plant, these nodules distort and deform the vegetable. Phytoplasma aster is a disease introduced by leaf hoppers and among the list of common carrot problems. The disease can survive winter in weeds and then transfer to other plant hosts. When carrot roots develop excess furry roots on the main root and the foliage turns yellow, pull the plants. This disease will spread. It’s best to avoid planting in that area for at least a season unless you solarize and sterilize the soil. Control leaf hoppers and nematodes with natural bacterial agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).
