Today’s is Joe Medicine Crow. Joe served the U.S. Army during World War II as an infantry Soldier with the 103rd Infantry Division. Joe fought bravely during World War II, wearing his Crow Nation war paint under his Army uniform and earning the Bronze Star Medal as well as the French Legion d’Honneur. But his most significant accomplishments would come after the war.
After the Army, Joe was appointed tribal historian and anthropologist for Crow Nation. He used his position as historian and anthropologist to further the history of Crow Nation, authored several books and addressed the United Nations
Joe was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 for his works in Native American history and culture and for being the last living plains war chief. He was also the last living person to have received oral testimony from participant in the Battle of Little Big Horn, a battle in which his grandfather was a scout for Gen. George Custer.
Joe Medicine Crow passed away Sunday April 3, 2016.
We honor his service.
