Kayla Mcmail - BA Product Design
Design a trike suitable for children age 3-6 years who may have physical and learning disabilities. The product must be accessible to children who could benefit from it in terms of accessing suitable physical therapeutic exercise and access to play and the learning it enables. The new design must resolve issues with high labour cost and the manufacturing complexity of the existing design.
How you’ve found the project?
I really enjoyed this project. DEMAND was always helpful and great at getting back to me with any questions. The trike was more complex than I was expecting as there was more components than I anticipated and how my trike would function would have to be different to any other trikes or bike on the market. However, it was very enjoyable, as I knew that this design was helping children and I could have a bit of fun with the designs. I learned some new skills while working this project as I designed an LED strip using Arduino to go across the bottom of the trike.
The end project
The Go Cub which is designed for children with disabilities from the age of 3, has cheetah aesthetics to make the feel child as if they are being as fast, powerful and majestic as a cheetah. It has sensory stimulus from engraving on the body and the handle in the shape of cheetah spots. It also gets sensory stimulus from the LED strip that runs across the bottom of the trike, These work by every turn of the wheel an LED turns on this gives the child motivation to keep going, after 10 seconds of no movement the LEDs turn off. The back wheels come off to be able to transport the trike easier and the seat and handle are adjustable so the trike will grow with the child. The seat has extra padding so give spinal support to children with scoliosis. The tyres are rubber tries so can be deflated to slow down the rider for safety purposes and they are 12 inch tyres so the rider has the same size tyres as their peers.
