From Weslaco we go east back to a city briefly visited a while ago. Harlingen: All America City. This city of over 50,000 is, and has been for over a century, a leader amongst the Rio Grande Valley, more notably in the fields of Education, Health Care, and the Military. Home to Texas State Technical Institute, which celebrates it's 50th birthday next month. Valley Baptist Center has helped countless residents of the area, including bringing yours truly into this world, for over Eighty years. Now an Airport, Harlingen was home to a Confederate Air Base and still is home to the Marine Military Academy. LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, The nation's first and currently largest Mexican-American Civil Rights and Political Organization has roots in Harlingen. In 1927, one of its predecessor organizations, Latin American Citizens League was created as a result of the controversial Harlingen Convention. The Harlingen Convention hosted representatives from all over Texas to speak of issues regarding descrimination and legal rights of Mexican American citizens in Texas. Although the convention itself ended with most representatives walking out during, the aforementioned leagues would later merge with similar organizations in Corpus Christi to form what is now LULAC

Nope, not creepy at all.
.
For someone who hates horror movies, I really love creepy buildings and ghost towns. I guess I just love history and imagining life before cars, cell phones, TV and internet. I find it fascinating that people built a schoolhouse to hold 1,200 students - and now, 150 years later, the town only has 855 residents in total. This giant building sits as a reminder of a time when this town was bustling with miners, prostitutes, gamblers, drunks...and kids. Ah! What a time to be alive!

Creepiest exploring I've ever experienced, hands down. The crypt of President Garfield, who was assassinated with a $15 revolver. I walked down this winding creepy staircase to find his coffin, which isn't buried, or even in a wall. I won't ever go there again, but it's open to the public if you're feelin' extra halloweeny. .
