Timta gravfältet, Östjädra. (Dingtuna 30:1) (post nr. 2)
There are so many grave fields (gravfält) in Dingtuna so I will do a few posts for each one. The parish of Dingtuna is the richest in Västmanland for ancient monuments (fornlämningar). This grave field was more than I expected. Next to the grave field is the ruins of a cottage (torp) called "Timta", thus the name. The larger area is called Östjädra. When I climbed up the hill and over the ridge, in front of me were two monumental burial cairns (gravrösen) in amazing condition. There were also some well preserved circular stone-settings (runa stensättningar) around the burial cairns. Overall the grave field has 40 ancient monuments consisting of 2 burial cairns, 34 circular stone-settings and 4 standing stones (bautastenar/resta stenar). There also seems to be a kind of "cist-grave" that I saw and added the photo to this post.
The larger burial cairn is 13m in diameter and 2 meters high, the smaller is 9m in diameter and 0.7m high. The grave field itself is 120x60 meters in size. The standing stones are 0.7-1.1m in height. They almost seem to be in a circle and one has fallen over. Maybe they once made a stone circle (domarring). In Sweden, burial cairns were the burial practice of the Bronze Age (1700-500BCE) and the stone-settings and standing stones were from the following Iron Age (500BCE-1050CE). The last period of the Iron Age was the Viking Age. People here may have been burying their dead since the Stone Age but their burials were not as monumental and have not been found yet.
