Truly waterproof hiking boots are expensive. But they're a key piece of hiking equipment to have when exploring the cold, wet terrain we're about to be surrounded by for the next 6 months. That's why I've teamed up with @lowa.canada and @bc_adventuresmart to GIVE AWAY a pair from @lowa.canada while helping teach people the importance of being safe and prepared. Just a couple more weeks to enter our Joffre Lakes Hike Safety Challenge to win some so get on it! Looking for quieter trails? Here are some tips:
πŸ’Ž Weekdays are less busy than weekends
πŸ’Ž Sunrise and sunset are much less busy than midday (not to mention hiking under headlamp is super fun!)
πŸ’Ž Venture places more than two hours away from a major city centre
πŸ’Ž Pick trails off paved roads (not all FSRs require 4WD)
πŸ’Ž Take a ferry (seeing a trend? the more difficult to get to, the less busy it typically is, yet these things don't have to be that hard, lots of short, cheap ferries, short FSRs, etc)
πŸ’Ž Hike in the rain or snow (west coast weather changes on a dime, you're likely to get at least a peek at good weather at some point during your trip!)
πŸ’Ž Look at a map instead of mainstream media for info. Pick a random lake or peak and figure out if there's a trail to it.

Do you guys know that the @alpineclubcan has a bunch of cozy backcountry huts throughout the country you can use? You don't need to be an ACC member to book one (though I recommend you become one! It's great for so many reasons including discounted hut rates!). Hut are especially wonderful for shoulder season like now when it's not as comfortable to camp in a tent. This past weekend I went up to the Wendy Thompson Hut with some friends and we had a great time despite all the rain. While we had originally hoped to hike up nearby Mt Rohr, the wet and foggy conditions suggested otherwise. Instead of cancelling the weekend though, we decided to just hike to the hut. We braved the elements and were rewarded with stunning scenery. It's a great spot near Pemberton with the trailhead just off the highway so any car can access it. The hike to and from the hut was well-marked and trodden so easy to follow. It was 15km return gaining 605 metres and passes through beautiful meadows and lakes. The hut itself is in the Marriott Basin surrounded by the stunning Cayoosh Range of mountains and inside you will find a cozy fireplace and plenty of space for up to 16 people. See more from our trip in my Instastories and learn more about the hut at alpineclubofcanada.ca

Having the right gear makes all the difference between a miserable day out and a gloriously fun time playing in the Autumn elements. I just got home from a short overnight up to the Wendy Thompson Hut. We got rained on, we had to walk through tons of muck, we even got a beautiful dusting of snow. It was wet and it was chilly but I was 100% cozy the whole time thanks to the magic that is goretex and merino wool. My fantastic Lady Light GTX boots from @lowa.canada with merino blend socks from Costco plus my Zeta LT @arcteryx jacket from @vpovancouver with @icebreakernz baselayer underneath were the key pieces that kept me completely warm and dry all weekend. I'm not financially wealthy so I know good gear is a HUGE investment but guys it is SO worth it. It's taken me years to build up my equipment closet but with just a couple big purchases each year you can love and embrace hiking in all weather. I view them as safety investments as it's important you can rely on your gear to properly protect you from the elements and good quality stuff lasts for years to come.

Bowen Island is my absolute favourite place to hike when it's raining. Bowen is stunning in every type of weather, but it is one of few places that really comes alive with precipitation. The mist makes it such a magical place to explore. Grabbing a coffee from The Snug Cafe before strolling through Crippen Regional Park is my fave, first with a quick visit off the ferry to the lagoon and then through the park, looping around Killarney Lake. Just a cheap, 20 minute ferry from transit-accessible Horseshoe Bay. Makes a perfect daytrip for weekends like these πŸ’™

You never forget the hike that changed everything for you. It was early November eight years ago. Snow had just started dusting the visible mountaintops. The air was crisp and fresh with daily rain. My girl Meg and I decided to hike The Chief in the late afternoon. We weren't avid hikers at this point, exploring mainly well-known trails. Hiking, we thought, was just like going for a more strenuous walk. The trailhead was right near the town of Squamish after all. We had hiking shoes on, a backpack with a jacket and some water. That's about it, and sadly that's all the average person takes out for a dayhike. We reached the top just as the sun was setting over the horizon. It was gorgeous. Time to quickly turn back though as we knew it'd soon be dark. It was Autumn though, and we were in the forest. That darkness came down on us like a hammer. I don't think we even made it halfway down before we were surrounded in the complete blackness of night. We didn't have a light. Neither of us. No one else was on the trail. I was scared so I was trying to run ahead to get down as quick as possible. My friend was more experienced in hiking and urged me to take it slow so we didn't get injured. For an hour or two we were on our bums, crab-walking down over the big boulders, four-point contact with every step. Suddenly the surroundings seemed really thick. There was no discernable trail. We were clearly off track. We knew we just needed to go down so we cut our own path, desperately hoping it would lead us to the parking lot. Then a ray of light came. Literally. THANK GOD for that girl who decided to go for a solo night run up this trail. We could see her headlamp in the distance and called out to her. She pointed the way out, saying we were close. Hope regained, we followed her direction and made it out safe and sound.
.
That hike could have ended so, SO differently for us. It sadly does for so many. Never again will I go out unprepared. We all make mistakes, but hopefully we learn from them and help others avoid them altogether. Learn about how to hike safely at @bc_adventuresmart and share your wisdom with others.
