He was someone. He was worthy. He was love. He was beautiful.

It’s not every day you get to meet someone who has been through the most unimaginable terror and near death experience as Bernie. Bernie had his throat cut open from one side to the other and then he was thrown into a box beside a dumpster with four other decapitated roosters. Although he appeared lifeless, he silently clung to life until animal control found him and brought him to us. His horrific experience isn’t what made him so special. It is much more than that.
When Bernie would run, every footstep was a loud thud. He ran with such excitement, enthusiasm and confidence, because he knew that exciting things were here in this world just for him. We gave that to him. We showed him what it means to be special, loved, safe and protected.
When Bernie first arrived, he was solemn. He was handed treats of various kinds and he would not acknowledge them. It was like to him, nothing in this world was his. It was like he felt that knife that cut his throat was right in defining who he was, like he was nothing. In his mind he was no one and he didn’t matter at all.
The people who hurt him are liars. They lied to Bernie with their blade. With their swipe of a knife, they told him horrible things, and he felt it deeply. It took time for us to prove to him that those people were wrong, so wrong. Gradually, Bernie learned that those treats were for him, and from there, the world started to open up into a place he could feel around him.
