PLEASE READ: There is no magic pill, no matter what someone tries to sell you. All you have to achieve is a caloric deficit and at the end of the day, you will lose weight. So a caloric deficit over time does the job 💪🏼

✅How to achieve a caloric deficit? There are endless ways! Here are my recommendations which are health-promoting and can be maintained long-term (because many weight-loss strategies are not healthy, especially not long term, for example avoiding fruits 🙄). Here we go:

🏃🏽Being more active throughout the day
🥒Eat more foods that are low in calories, high in nutrition and volumes like fruits and vegetables. They make you satisfied and keep you satisfied because they are loaded with nutrients and fiber
🍴Eat less. We tend to eat when we are not really hungry and overeat
⏱Intermittent Fasting (IF) It’s a tool where you narrow your feeding window. Try it and see if it helps you to achieve your weight-loss goals easier (check out my youtube video about IF).
🙂Less stress. When we are stressed our body craves sugary foods
🚰Drink more water, especially before a meal so you overeat less
🙏🏼Have a more mindful relationship towards your food. Appreciating your meal and not stuffing it down makes you mostly eat healthier and less.

What I ate today!

Started my morning with some protein peanut butter & chocolate blackberry chia pudding. Made with coconut 🥥 milk blended with a banana 🍌 and blackberries, chia seeds, peanut butter chocolate protein powder, and topped with peanut butter (peanut butter powder), blackberries and bananas 🍌.

After my workout 🏋️‍♀️.
A purple sweet potato 🍠 topped with hummus. And steamed asparagus.
.
End my day with some golden mashed potatoes 🥔, BBQ tempeh, and green peas. So simple and so good 😊. Yes you can eat potatoes 🥔! These mashed potatoes 🥔 are just made with organic potatoes 🥔 ( cause I keep the skin on mine), unsweetened almond milk, and salt & pepper. Potatoes 🥔 are really good for you. Just keep the butter and extras out of your mashed potatoes 🥔.

There's more to progress than the number on the scale!

I think we all have at some point in our life gotten stuck on what the number on the scale says and maybe even equated our self-worth to it. I'm here to tell you that that is absolutely not true. You are more than a number! And the sad truth is that no matter what the scale says, you may never be truly satisfied.

That is why I don't even own a scale anymore. I sold it when we moved and I have no desire to purchase another. It brought me absolutely no joy except for mini-victories here and there. When I first switched to a plant-based lifestyle I immediately lost 5lbs without even trying. I was elated. But I never really struggled with weight so this was extra pounds leftover from my college days. I'm glad to have lost them without much effort but I have plateaued at this weight ever since.

At the same time, I was also working a job that was increasingly becoming stressful. I was constantly snacking on chips and granola bars to get through the day and my only form of exercise was a Zumba class once or twice a week. The scale was my enemy during this time.

Now that I'm actually making an effort to eat well, taking the time to prepare healthy and delicious meals, and working out more consistently, I am learning to see progress in a completely different way.

My clothes are fitting looser.

I feel stronger and have more energy, I can do more reps with heavier weights and run longer than before.

I'm moving more in general and getting more steps (a step tracker helps a lot with this, I use a @fitbit and love it). I make tasty meals that are so good and so good for me! But when I eat something less healthy, I don't stress over it, it's a treat not a cheat. It's about balance and making it a lifestyle. Cravings are few and far between.

My digestion is regular and I rarely have any bloating.

My muscles don't get as sore as they used to from my initial workouts.

I just genuinely feel so much better about myself and have less stress.

Vitamin D works with our body to ensure we absorb and maintain calcium stores that keep OUR BONES STRONG AND STURDY.⁣⠀

Ensuring adequate Vitamin D intake prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults and when our calcium intake is also good, protects us from osteoporosis when we are old.⁣⠀

It also does lots of other stuff with cell growth, immunity and inflammation.⁣⠀

HOW TO GET VITAMIN D?⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Vitamin D is quite hard to find in foods but is found in fortified products and supplementation.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
We do however produce our own Vitamin D when UV rays from the sun hit our skin, pretty nifty little trick their skin. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
A lot of factors impact UV exposure and Vitamin D production e.g. season, time of day, length of the day, cloudiness, smog, skin pigmentation, and sunscreen. Also, UV doesn’t go through glass so you need to be outside. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
5-30 minutes of sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM. ONLY TWICE a week to our arms, legs, face or back is suggested to likely be sufficient to maintain adequate vitamin D. UV is also a carcinogen responsible for skin cancer so minimal exposure for vitamin D is recommended.⁣⠀
⁣⠀
If you are inside and do not get this much sun exposure, include food and supplement sources. Vegan diets are associated with deficient vitamin D intakes, so do your best to choose fortified plant milk and consider a supplement if indoors a lot. (Vitamin D2 is the vegan form, D3 is made from animal products).⁣⠀

GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FROM A DOCTOR OR DIETITIAN FOR ANY SUPPLEMENTS.⁣⠀

Mushrooms do not contain a significant amount of vitamin D so are not a reliable source

Looking for a fun way to incorporate more fiber and protein into your sweet treats? Try this CHICKPEA COOKIE DOUGH 🍪

I took a tip from @frommybowl and gave this a try and it was delicious 😋 It’s not overly sweet, light, and similar texture to cookie dough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I ended up using canned chickpeas which does leave a subtle lingering “bean” flavor but you can also soak + cook your own chickpeas from scratch! Modified recipe below but you can find Caitlin’s full recipe on her blog.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To make the CHICKPEA COOKIE DOUGH, you will need:
• 1 can organic chickpeas (drained, rinsed, and soaked in water 12 hours)
• 1/4 cup tiger nut butter (can sub cashew or almond butter)
• 1/4 cup organic maple syrup
• 1/4 cup organic almond flour
• 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
• Pinch of @redmondrealsalt
• 1/2 cup @enjoylifefoods dark chocolate chips
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Drain and rinse chickpeas and soak in a sealed container with water overnight (this helps to get rid of some of the excessive “chickpea taste). You can also soak and cook your own chickpeas if you don’t use canned!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a large food processor, combine chickpeas, tiger butter, almond flour, maple syrup, vanilla, and sea salt. Pulse blend until texture is smooth (you may need to use a spatula to move content around).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One blended and smooth, fold in dark chocolate chips and serve! Store in the fridge up to 4 days. Enjoy!

I've never been a fan of sumo deadlifts but decided to do these for this cycle of training strictly. Won't do anything heavy till I feel technique is on point. Playing around with different widths of the stance but it's nice to change things. It just made me realize I need to get my hips stronger. So I've added more exercises to address that. Don't mind the funky angles I tilted my phone to record, and video is sped up.
