If you miss homely foods in Kyoto, go to Vegetarian Ren! Owners are a lovely Taiwanese couple. This was the most substantial meal we had in Japan at a great price! Pure vegan, no alliums and alcohol used.

Their hotpots are their signature dishes. Soup base is made from 15 ingredients. Each set comes with a veggies, mushrooms, rice cakes, rice, tofu and 3 side dishes. The karaage (deep fried soy meat) was downright addictive and not too oily. The owner also shared a few tips on making karaage, mainly it’s to avoid squeezing the soaked TVP too dry.
Located just behind Hankyu Omiya Station, a transit spot so most visitors will surely pass by.
