Shop-bought veggie burgers are often deep-fried and quite expensive. You can make your own versions at home which can be frozen and then oven-cooked from frozen as needed. They can all be served with dips or as a filling for pittas, flatbreads or wraps. It is good to add a vegetable of some kind- mashed squash, carrot or sweet potato work really well- you can mash these from boiled or roasted vegetables.

Ingredients 400g tin chickpeas or beans such as borlotti, kidney or butterbeans, drained and rinsed 300g/10½oz cooked, mashed vegetables such as carrot, squash, potato, sweet potato or parsnip 1 garlic clove, crushed by an adult or with a garlic press 1 tbsp sunflower, vegetable or olive oil squeeze lemon juice pinch ground cumin, coriander or paprika, mild chilli flakes, to taste freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp tahini (optional) 4 tbsp sesame seeds, breadcrumbs or crushed crackers (optional), for coating

Method Adult’s job: Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.

Mash the beans or chickpeas as much as you can either with a potato masher in a bowl or with a hand mixer (supervised). Alternatively you could make the mix in a food processor if you have one.
Add the mashed vegetables and garlic and any herbs, spices or tahini that you want to use.
Mix well and the kids can taste and add lemon juice, spices or pepper to their taste.

The mixture then needs to be rolled into four burger-sized balls with wet hands, or make 12 smaller "falafels" - kids have the perfect sized hands for this. Flatten the balls slightly. If you like, you can coat them with sesame seeds, crushed crackers or breadcrumbs for extra crunch.

Place the baking tray in the oven and cook for 20-30 minutes, turning the burgers over midway through cooking. Allow to cool a little before serving

In exchange for good treatment, they see their “reward” as the eggs that their chickens lay. Sounds like a “win-win,” but we will see later in detail why this logic does not pan out. In order to fully understand our impact on these birds, we must look way beyond treatment.

The Harm of the Hatcheries
Let’s start where nearly all chicks are born: in hatcheries. When we buy chicks, we are directly and financially supporting hatcheries who are responsible for a whole host of staggeringly cruel practices. Their most egregious offense is the maceration (grinding up alive) and suffocation of billions of baby male chicks — 6 billion globally every year. Those who adopt or rescue backyard chickens instead of buying from hatcheries withdraw their support from the hatcheries but still face several important ethical considerations in answering the question, “what’s the harm in collecting and eating the eggs that our adopted chickens lay?” The Harm of Breeding
Chickens bred for egg laying lay their entire body weight in eggs every 24 to 30 days (during prime laying period). The weight of each egg, in proportion to the weight of the hen, is comparable to the weight of a human newborn, and anyone who has observed a hen straining and pushing to lay an egg for hours can easily liken this to a human mother going through labor. The fact is that these birds are irreparably harmed by the selective breeding that has forced them to lay an unnatural and unhealthy number of eggs — between 250 to 300 a year — resulting in a host of painful and life-threatening reproductive diseases and premature death. Rescuers who provide life-long sanctuary to these hens, including the so-called “heritage” breeds, see them live only 4 to 6 years on average and commonly die of complications caused by egg laying.

Been suffering from deppression and ptsd almost 20 years ( well...depression bit longer).
It's up and down moods, energy, self esteem...
And trying to work as a 'regular ' chef is not possible for me, as long hours and beeing overwork is just making my mental health problems worst. It took preaty long time to accept it.

What is your favorite salad? Mine is definitely tabbouleh - comprised of parsley, tomatoes, onion, bulgur, lemon, olive oil and salt. I love adding pomegranate to it too ❤️ But nothing tastes as good as the tabbouleh in Lebanon because the fresh vegetables there are so flavorful. So every time my mom visits me from Lebanon, she brings all the tabbouleh ingredients with her, to make me a truly Lebanese tabbouleh in Dubai ❤️🙏 The way to my heart is definitely through food 😂❤️
