Before I went and saw this, it was hard not to see the critics reviews in advance – 29% on rotten tomatoes and 32/100 on Metacritic. The good news is that ‘Venom’ is not that bad. However, it is not the masterpiece that everyone hoped it would be either.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer and Written by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, ‘Venom’ is a very up-and-down film, as there is not clear genre in which it wants to be. There are elements of comedy, elements of drama, elements of action; however, none of these are done to a great level, resulted in a very tonally-mixed movie. It also must be noted just how crazy the film is, and furthermore how calm the characters are about the circumstances. The fact that Tom Hardy (as the man with symbiote inside of him) or Michelle Williams (his fiancée) basically act like it’s a normal day is somewhat off-putting and confusing. Shouldn’t they be freaking out or at least concerned?
Now for the plot. The film follows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) who by a freak accident acquires the powers of a symbiote. Nothing much else can be said other than that Michelle Williams is his fiancée and Riz Ahmed is the villain without giving any spoilers, but that also says a lot about how thin the plot is – which is a major error with ‘Venom’
One thing that this film can be commended for is it’s acting. The actors involved clearly know just how crazy the plot is, but they are willing to go along with it. Tom Hardy is trying his best with such a weak script, and Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed, fully commit to their roles, no matter how far-fetched their actions are. Jenny Slate also deserves a mention as Dr Dora Skirth, a scientist who reaches out to Eddie when the tests Ahmed’s character is conducted start going awry.
This film knows it doesn’t warrant a long run-time, and that is reflected in the 1 hour 40-minute run-time. ‘Venom’ would have probably benefited from an extra 5-10 minutes, but that probably wouldn’t have made the film any better.
If you’re looking for a trashy fun film, look no further than ‘Venom’. If not, then I’d say give this one a miss.
