So. I went to prison.
Luckily just to do a presentation about #travel and my book #Elsewhere on the world's 20 least-visited countries. The inmates, all young guys, sat still and listened quietly, hardly moving, for over an hour. Before asking loads of questions. That convicts sit still and pay attention for that long has apparantly never happened before at the high-security facility in #Larvik. I guess travel can really inspire, give hope and create dreams even, or maybe especially, to those that face years behind bars. They loved THE GARFORS, the backpack that I helped create in partnership with @nin.lifestyle. I gave them a book too, for their little library. One of them told me it will be the fourth book he reads, ever.
Prisoners in Norway are offered education, and several here are learning new skills in preparation for life outside the walls. Most of them faced tough childhoods, some still cannot read, others have never received a hug or felt human intimacy. To some of these lads the wardens are the closest they have ever had to family. I shook hands with all of the inmates, I am wishing them a bright future and that none of them will ever return.
A prison officer took this photo of me outside the inner walls. "LF" above the door stands for Larvik fengsel - Larvik prison. #Larvikfengsel #Vestfold #Norway #prison #jail #Ingenstad @skaldforlag
