I read the first of @oscardemuriel Frey & McGray series, The Strings of Murder ages ago, loved it and then haven't found the time to read the rest of the series. Unpardonable. But as today is a typical gloomy English January day, staying in bed and reading the next two books seems like the perfect end of holiday treat.
Since this series combines all my favourite things - a Victorian race against time to capture psychotic serial killers, with a witty and entertaining police duo with only a grudging respect for each other, taking place (mostly) on the gloomy, beautiful streets of Edinburgh, flitting from lunatic asylums to the creme of the Scottish aristocracy, all served up with a heavy (and credible) dash of the occult - heavenly. So, no surprise that I am deeply involved in the second novel, A Fever Of The Blood and probably will be too busy to speak much today.
A Fever Of The Blood moves along at a faster and more assured pace, as most second novels do due to having done with introductions in the first. I am thrilled that this book seems to be going to address my questions from the first novel, and has reintroduced many of the most intriguing characters: Pansy, Dr Clouston and Caroline Ardglass.
This is a fantastic slice of Victorian noir, brilliantly written and satisfyingly nasty. A word of warning though: these books make me so hungry. In the first, it was whisky fudge, now it is roast chicken dinners. And lots and lots of whisky. Be prepared. Though bowing to the unlikelihood of my actually consuming whisky, I just bought a whisky candle instead
