I saw “Zero Hour!” (1957) for the first time this weekend. It was the film from which “Airplane!” (1980) borrowed much of its storyline, so much so that the makers of “Airplane!” actually bought the rights to “Zero Hour!” so they could use some of the dialogue verbatim. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect or if I could take it seriously, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. It probably helped that it’s been several years since I’ve last seen “Airplane!”, but I enjoyed “Zero Hour!”. I thought it had a good pace and it definitely held my attention. Of course, Linda Darnell (1923-1965) and Dana Andrews (1909-1992) are among my favorites, so I loved watching the two of them. This photo features Darnell with actor Ray Ferrell (1949-2006), who plays her son. #lindadarnell #monettamonday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #classicfilm #vintagefilm #zerohour #zerohour! #1957 #rayferrell

Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress Mary Philbin (1902-1993) 💖💖💖. After winning a film studio-sponsored beauty contest, Philbin made her screen debut in 1921. Named one of the inaugural group of WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1922, she became a popular actress of the silent era. Among her film credits are “Human Hearts” (1922), “The Temple of Venus” (1923), “The Rose of Paris” (1924), “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), “Surrender” (1927), “The Man Who Laughs” (1928), and “The Shannons of Broadway” (1929). She made her last screen appearance in “After the Fog” (1929), after which she retired, reportedly to care for her sick parents. Never married, she spent her later years living quietly away from the public eye before passing away from pneumonia in 1993 at the age of 90 😞🙏🏼💖. #maryphilbin #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #silenthollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #silentactress #silentfilmactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #silentbeauty #silentfilmbeauty

(Part 2 of 2, Continued from previous post) Ginger Rogers was married and divorced 5 times. Her 2nd husband, and the one she seemed the most wistful about in her autobiography, was popular actor Lew Ayres (1908-1996) to whom she was married from 1934-1940. Her other husbands were performer Jack Pepper (1902-1979), marine turned actor Jack Briggs (1920-1998), French actor Jacques Bergerac (1927-2014), and bandleader/singer/actor William Marshall (1917-1994). She had no children. Ginger Rogers passed away in 1995 from a heart attack at the age of 83. Her birthplace in Independence, Missouri has been restored into a museum and was the site of “The Ginger Rogers Festival” this past weekend. I had originally planned to attend, but ultimately some scheduling conflicts arose and I was not able to go. Did anyone here attend? I’d love to hear how it went!!! In the past few years, mainly from the recommendations of my dear friend @the_vintage_classics_9921 , Ginger Rogers has become one of my personal favorite actresses! I like her musical performances, but really I prefer her non-musical roles...she truly had star quality from even her earliest screen appearances 💖💖💖. #gingerrogers #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicsinger #vintagesinger #classicdancer #vintagedancer #oldhollywooddancer #astaireandrogers #backwardsandinheels #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #theydontmakeemlikethatanymore

(Part 1 of 2) Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress, singer, and dancer Ginger Rogers (1911-1995). Born in Missouri to separated parents, Rogers was raised by her mother Lela (1891-1977). Lela was a powerhouse, ahead of her time, and became one of the first female marines, a writer, and ultimately played an important role in her daughter’s life and career. Mother and daughter moved to my hometown of Fort Worth, TX around 1920. While Lela worked for the local paper as a drama critic, young Ginger entered a Charleston contest where the first prize was a 6 month dance tour. Fifteen year old Ginger won the top prize and thus her show business career began. She dropped out of high school (the same high school, though a different building, that I would later graduate from), Lela quit her job, and the pair headed out to tour the country. Following the tour, they settled in New York where Rogers made a name for herself singing on radio and performing on Broadway. It wasn’t long before Hollywood came calling and she made her film debut in a 1929 short. Her early films show that Rogers was a naturally gifted performer, but she truly found stardom as the dance partner of Fred Astaire (1899-1987). The pair made 10 films together including “Top Hat” (1935), “Swing Time” (1936), “Shall We Dance” (1937), and “Carefree” (1938). Other non-Astaire credits of Rogers include “42nd Street” (1933), “Gold Diggers of 1933” (1933), “Rafter Romance” (1933), “Chance at Heaven” (1933), “Finishing School” (1934), “Stage Door” (1937), “Vivacious Lady” (1938), “Bachelor Mother” (1939), “5th Avenue Girl” (1939), “Primerose Path” (1940), “Roxie Hart” (1942), “The Major and the Minor” (1942), “I’ll Be Seeing You” (1944), “It Had to Be You” (1947), “Dreamboat” (1952), “Monkey Business” (1952), and “Harlow” (1965). She won an Academy Award for her performance in “Kitty Foyle” (1940). (Continued in next post)

Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress Barbara Stanwyck (1907-1990) 💖💖💖. Her childhood was almost unimaginably difficult. Born into poverty, her pregnant mother died after being knocked off of a moving streetcar when Stanwyck was just 4. Her father abandoned the family shortly thereafter, leaving her (along with a brother 2 years her senior) to be raised by their older sister when possible...and, during times when the sister could not care for them, they were placed into foster care. Stanwyck’s older sister worked as a showgirl and it was this influence that initially interested her in becoming a performer. Stanwyck was working odd jobs by the time she was 14, getting her first chorus girl job at just 15. A few years later, she made the jump to acting, eventually starring in multiple hit Broadway plays. Her film debut came in 1927 and, although she initially disliked movie-making, she would go on to become a top Hollywood star. Among her film credits are “Night Nurse” (1931), “Ladies They Talk About” (1933), “Baby Face” (1933), “Stella Dallas” (1937), “Remember the Night” (1940), “The Lady Eve” (1941), “Ball of Fire” (1941), “Lady of Burlesque” (1943), “Double Indemnity” (1944), “Christmas in Connecticut” (1945), “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” (1946), “Sorry, Wrong Number” (1948), “Clash By Night” (1952), “Titanic” (1953), and “These Wilder Years” (1956). By the 1960s, she appeared more frequently on television, including starring in “The Barbara Stanwyck Show” and “The Big Valley”. In her later years, she appeared in the classic miniseries “The Thornbirds” and the short-run “Dynasty” spin-off, “The Colbys”. Stanwyck was married twice. With first husband Frank Fay (1891-1961), she adopted her only child, Dion (1932-2006), though she was estranged from her son for most of his adult life. Her second husband was actor Robert Taylor (1911-1969). The couple divorced in 1952 after 13 years of marriage, but he is widely considered to have been the love of her life. She was devastated by Taylor’s untimely 1969 death and had to take some time off from work to grieve 😞🙏🏼💖. Stanwyck died from heart failure and COPD in 1990 at the age of 82 😞🙏🏼💖.

Happy 83rd Birthday to actress Andra Martin (1935- ) 💖💖💖. After studying drama in college, Martin moved to New York to launch her career. Studying there under Lee Strasberg (1901-1982), she appeared in some summer stock performances while also working as a model. She made her screen debut in “Street of Sinners” (1957). A few of her other film credits include “The Lady Takes a Flyer” (1958), “The Big Beat” (1958), and “Up Periscope” (1959). I remember her best from an unintentionally hilarious movie called “The Thing That Couldn’t Die” (1958), which I saw as a kid when PBS (I think) aired it on their “One Star Theater”, a weekly showcase of low-budget sci-films. It’s definitely one of those movies that is so bad it’s good 😂😂😂. Martin also appeared on television in episodes of “Lawman”, “Cheyenne”, “77 Sunset Strip”, “Hawaiian Eye, “Maverick”, “Perry Mason”, “Wagon Train”, and “Bachelor Father”. She retired from acting in the 1960s. Martin was married to actor Ty Hardin (1930-2017) from 1958-1960 and the couple had twin boys. She remarried shortly thereafter, though that marriage also ended in divorced. She has been married to her current husband for 48 years. I certainly hope she is doing well and has a great birthday!!! 💖💖💖 #andramartin #happybirthday #83 #83yearsyoung #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #retrohollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #retroactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #retrobeauty

After retiring from acting, #GretaGarbo collected paintings and 18th-century French furniture. In the 1950s and '60s, she visited art galleries and exhibitions looking for pieces to buy. According to David Nash of Sotheby's, the living room of Garbo's Manhattan apartment featured three Renoir paintings and a Savonnerie rug. She also owned a Louis XV chair and banquet

#WhatEverHappenedtoBabyJane? Pre-Production.
__________
Robert Aldrich figured hard cash would be the best incentive he could offer Bette to make the movie. She knew about it and liked the property, but she didn't want to work with Joan Crawford, who had come backstage with Chuck Bowden and Paula Laurence after a performance of 'The Night of the Iguana' to try to talk her into making the film with her.

Bette was unreceptive. Let's make this quick, Joan, She snapped. I'm leaving for the country in five minutes. Crawford told her about the project and purred, I've always wanted to work with you. Bette looked at her and thought, this woman is full of shit.

Paula Laurence recalled that after Crawford left, Bette ranted and raved that she had wanted to buy the property, that she couldn't stand the idea of working with Crawford, that she was suspicious of the whole enterprise.

If she thinks I'm going to play that stupid bitch in the wheelchair, she bellowed just before she left the theater. She's got another thing coming!

Happy Heavenly Birthday to child actress Magda Foy (1905-2000?)* 💖💖💖. A native of New York, little Magda made her film debut in 1910. She is best known for her role in the Alice Guy-Blache (1873-1968) short film “Falling Leaves”, which is one of the most precious little stories I’ve ever watched 💖💖💖. After making her final film in 1917, she seems to have led a life out of the spotlight. She married in 1924 and had 3 children before her husband died in 1950. I don’t know much else about her, but she was so darling in “Falling Leaves” that I just had to remember here 💖💖💖. *(Some sources list 1973 as her date of death. I tried to do some research but found nothing to specifically support either date. I did find an obituary for someone with her married name from 1973, but it was not her, so I suspect that may be the source for the entries that list her date of death as 1973) #magdafoy #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #silenthollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #silentfilmactress #childactress #silentfilmactress #fallingleaves #1912
