My picture from underwater Sipadan has won a first price in Picture of the Year International, Science and Natural History category.

I am so proud that the jugdes chose this picture showing what nature can do when we let it. Sipadan is a tiny oceanic island and is a marine protected area.

It is important to remember that when people are posting about #Hawaii as a #beach #vacation #paradise, that these places are the #ancestral home of #native Hawaiians who have loved on the islands for hundreds of years before they were "discovered" by the Western world. #RockArt (#kiʻipōhaku) left on #volcanic rocks provides evidence that supports #oralhistory. These fragile sites are at rush from development and accidental damage as more people #gohawaii for their vacations. Our #leisure time can actively endanger their #heritage unless we are mindful and careful. #nativeawareness #nativehawaii #sharealoha #visitwithrespect

Who are we (magicians?) to ever think we can truly *leave no trace*. The fragments and remains of living remind us to wisely choose our legacy. Should we leave footprints and art, or strip mines and disease? Both stamp and infect. One gives, one takes. The choice that is left becomes the earth 🌎we walk. Well done @flagmountainfilm for bringing together such a powerful panel of artists and activists discussing the effects of Uranium mining. #cleanupthemines #publiclands #protectwhatyoulove #visitwithrespect

The Fremont sure had a way with rockart. What appear to be several "practice" lizards surround this guy until they got it just right. “Love Life”
valentine for the Landcestors,
Life in all Its forms: Animal, Vegetal, Fungal, Bacterial, and Mineral.
And for the Land I live upon and Its ancestral people, the Ute. For the Lands I have lived upon in the past, the homeland of the Kumeyaay, Tongva, Chinook, Cow Creek Umpqua, Guaycura, and Pericú people.

Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto | A procession of humanlike figures stream above large deer engraved on a canyon wall in the Bears Ears National Monument. Bears Ears was set aside in part to protect thousands of rock art sites like this one. The land is a giant, open-air art museum. I had climbed up to this beautiful petroglyph panel to shoot a time-lapse as the Milky Way rose behind it, but as dawn broke this morning
I realized this might be the better photograph. I’m in the West working on an @insidenatgeo and @ancientartarchive project to document rock art in western national monuments. For more follow me @salvarezphoto #BearsEars #visitwithrespect

The Milkyway wheels behind a rock art panel in the Bears Ears National Monument. I'd first tried to shoot this sequence in early 2017 and it took me 2 years to get back to it. However, as dawn broke after spending all night up I might have made a better image. Check out the @natgeo and @ancientartarchive feeds for that photo! #visitwithrespect #bearsears

I'm honored and pleased to be invited to this year's annual Celebrate Cedar Mesa weekend with Friends of Cedar Mesa. @cedarmesafriends

I'll be giving a slide show of my nightscapes of the Bears Ears region. Come and listen to my rambles and thoughts about the night sky and the Bears Ears.

I hope many of you can attend!

The surrounding mountains got 51 inches of snow in the last week.
Be careful out there in the back country folks, avalanche danger is real!

The Milky Way wheels over the winter Utah sky. There are 179 small human like figures in this San Juan County rock art panel. There are also two deer represented in unusually realistic style. The panel marks a shift in the lives of Pre-columbian Puebloan communities when individual ceremonies gave way to group events. There is tremendous history recorded in Americas public lands. The panel is thought to be circa 1300 BCE. #visitwithrespect

Photogrammetry by Aaron Huey @argonautphoto | SOUND ON “The petroglyphs and pictographs are like a library to the Pueblo community. Just like if you go to a library to get a book, you learn about history, it’s constant learning from our ancestors,” says Octavius Seowtewa, Zuni medicine man. This panel in #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah, goes by many names and contains hundreds of symbols from birds to spiritual beings, a snake or water, ways of counting, objects and tools used in daily life, and more. Part of an @InsideNatGeo project with @devlin_gandy. This is not a video; it’s a tour through a massive digital model created from thousands of photographs, using a technique called photogrammetry. Through working with Native American elders, communities, and organizations, we hope to educate the public on the strong connection these places still have for native communities while also easing the desire to visit these locations in person through digital access and education. Learn more about how to #VisitWithRespect at the nonprofit @CedarMesaFriends, and follow @argonautphoto for more #photogrammetry and his images from #BearsEars and our #PublicLands.
