During Ramadan, Muslims fast from food and drink during daylight hours. Iftar, the breaking of the fast after sunset, is a very communal time. It’s common to share it with extended family or friends. In Istanbul, crowds of people bring food for a picnic so that they can enjoy their meal in between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Two of my Syrian friends invited me to share Iftar with them there and it was such a wonderful experience!
