How do you deal with Homesickness?
It's kind of weird to think I've been away from home for almost 4 years now.
But, where is home for me?
I grew up in several cities (Jakarta, Slawi, Semarang) in Indonesia which are chaotic places. But I loved it. I loved the people, the food, the culture and how easy life was. Because here's the thing: If you're ever lucky enough to live there, it starts to get comfortable. You have the same friends you've had since elementary school, you live in luxury because the living cost is cheap.
In year 2001 I decided to step out my comfort zone and I moved to Mainz, Germany. It was kind of a rough road at the beginning, especially because I was away from everything I held familiar. But it was also kind of exhilarating because for the first time in my life, I was able to make decisions away from the people who knew me my whole life. I married a wonderful man, met very good friends, finished medical school, got a job that I love. Mainz has been my home for almost 14 years before I embarked on our hiking and cycling adventure in the Americas.
I got homesick to both homes. This year I hope I can finally finish my journey in the Americas and go home, where maybe the new adventure will begin?? Photographer: @patrickpoendl
