When I was really fat, I used to be so, so scared of going to the gym because I thought I'd be ridiculed and laughed at because of my weight. My first gym session of this journey was actually a class and I always used to go in the corner at the back, away from everybody so nobody would see me. I wasn't quiet but I made sure nobody saw me. However after a bit, people came up to me and spoke to me, complimented me for my efforts and I felt encouraged.
After a very short amount of time, I started to go away from the corner or the back of the class and started becoming more involved but then I wouldn't ever look in the mirrors. I kept coming in the class but I wouldn't look in the mirror if I was exercising. I used to turn my back to it or avoid it completely if I could. I felt sad when I saw it whilst exercising because it felt like I've done a lot of work for nothing. Again, people gave me positive vibes and great encouragement and eventually, after a while, I can look in the mirror when exercising and not feel repulsed.
It was from then that I fully realised that people in the gym purely don't give a flying shit about you exercising and they don't make fun of you. They encourage and motivate you to be better. Hell, they're there with you for the same reasons. They fight, laugh and cry with you and it's motivating to see that others go through the same as you regardless of size. I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's not just a physical journey but a mental one too. Both go hand-in-hand.
I've been fortunate enough to meet awesome people who have started my love for health and fitness or have encouraged it. It's also fortunate I found people who encourage me to go for my dreams and make me believe anything is possible.
That's what it's all about: finding the very thing that keeps you going and makes you want to do better. Hold tight to those who encourage and ditch those who discourage you!
