Thoughts on the new @ww @kurbohealth weight loss app for children age 8 to 17:
I find this program to be completely unethical for many reasons.
-This app preoccupies children with body image. The best-known environmental contributor to the development of eating disorders is the sociocultural idealization of thinness.
-Dieting increases risk of eating disorders. Nat’l Eating Disorders Association reports that 35% of “normal dieters” progress to pathological dieting & that 20-25% of those folks develop eating disorders.
-Eating disorders have the HIGHEST DEATH RATE of all mental illness. Let that sink in- Someone with an eating disorder is more likely to die than someone with schizophrenia or depression.
-Young people between ages 15-24 with anorexia have 10x the risk of dying compared to their same-aged peers.
-The app is not managed by health care professionals. A health coach does not need to have any formal training. Do you really want someone outside a credentialed practitioner monitoring nutrition for a growing child?
-American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children DON’T DIET. -The small pilot study to discover efficacy of the program had WEAK results.

If you haven’t heard yet weight watchers has released a diet app targeted at 8-17 year olds.
As a girl mom and a woman who struggled with her body image from a young age, this breaks my heart.
8-17 year olds. Let that sink in.
Kids.
Kids who need to be taught about healthy food and balanced living not about tracking it.
Kids who need to be taught to listen to how their body feels, not to focus on a number on the scale.
Kids who need to be taught to love and embrace their bodies, not pick them apart and log it in an app.
Kids who are already the most at risk demographic for eating disorders, disordered eating and body image issues.
Kids who are subjected daily to societal messages and pressures about how they should be, weight, look already.
Yes, we have an obesity epidemic today and yes, it is affecting our kids too.
But this isn’t how we handle it.
This isn’t how we teach them healthy living.
This isn’t how we teach them to love their bodies.
This isn’t how we change things.
This perpetuates diet culture.
This creates unhealthy body images and food habits from an even younger age.
This. Isn’t. How.
Shame on you weight watchers.
This isn’t the best we can do.
Far from it.

I had a snack attack last night, so trying to get some extra movement in today. I'd much rather eat more, move more than eat less, move less. Do your journey the way you know how. My way is working out pretty darn good for me, plus I always live my best food life, eating delicious food. YOU CAN HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, if you balance it accordingly and listen to your body. Become in tune with your body. Also, yoga is not always slow. sometimes it looks like this and you sweat your ass off.

The Rock’n’Roll Marathon series has a Heavy Medal Program. For running multiple distance races in a season you receive a medal. For for finishing the New Orleans and Chicago Half Marathons I earned the “Take a Bow.” Those races represent my fastest and slowest times in a Half. Receiving this medal after having time after and perspective on the experience has made me appreciate it even more.
This has also recommitted to running and want to share with y’all that I’ll be running in 4 R&R Half Marathons next season. 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘! This Citrus Marinated Chicken is my version of El Pollo Loco chicken. My absolute favorite fast food spot! My version is 0-1 SP, depending on how you want to count the marinade. If you haven't had El Pollo Loco Chicken, think of this like a classic Pollo Asada. I eat this with a side of beans and low-carb tortillas, in tacos, on top of nachos... I mean, the options really are endless. ⁣

We don’t need an app for that, @kurbohealth.

We don’t need uneducated coaches supporting children on a journey that they need not embark on.

We don’t need children to learn about diet-culture derived food judgements. Sadly, they’ll likely get there without this app, but handheld, interactive apps will communicate messages earlier and with more authority than is fair.

No judgement, but how many of us have used Dr. Google to inform health decisions? Me, too. it’s okay.

But imagine what a young brain does with information on the internet. Based on neurodevelopment alone, it is sooo much easier to identify nicely designed, interactive (with adult humans who are 1. THIN and 2. Paid to be invested in you, but only want $$$) technology as trustworthy and legitimate than it would be for adults. This is called exploitation.

We don’t need kids to get started on the diet cycle before they’re old enough to consent. We need to understand that this is setting kids up for lifelong reliance on @ww (Which is ABSOLUTELY by design) and weight cycling and body distrust and disorder.

Unlearning is possible and powerful.
But it would be so much nicer to avoid the need to unlearn in the first place.

I’m not going to take @kurbohealth into much of my IG future unless they unveil some other disastrous thing, in which case, I’ll get back on my podium and 🗣.

I’m working on that. Work in progress. And today I’m proud of myself. I have officially lost 50 pounds since March. .

I still have pounds to lose but for today I’m focused on what I’ve gained. I’m healthier than I was 5 months ago. Both mentally and physically. I’m motivated for more!

Saturday Weigh-in 💕

Down -2.6 - This is a beautiful loss. I’m grateful for the loss and the minus on the scale.

But I wanted to take a moment to say something that I said before and believe 110%

You can lose all the weight and reach your goal weight, but if you have not also worked on the inner stuff. Healing, forgiving yourself, being kind to yourself and evicting the negative voice, you will not be whole. The scale will never bring you happiness.
I acknowledge that I have more inner work to do. My excitement for this loss was overshadowed by things that I still need to work on.

Im grateful for my mood today, because it has shown me the path that I couldn’t find the entrance to.

I’m happy and grateful that my focus this week showed up on the scale. I’m also grateful for today and for more awareness, I’m ready to swiss this week.

To all the ladies (and fellas) out there who are telling yourselves you’re too old or too far down the road to lose weight... you’re lying to yourself. I’m proof that you can do this at any age. Any stage of life. I’ve had three baby girls. One stillborn son I lost at 21 weeks. I gained 20 lbs with him and I just recently (today) reached my pre-pregnancy weight. It took me almost 5 months to lose 20 lbs. My journey has had lots of ups and downs and setbacks. Times of failure and times of triumph. I’ve cried tears of frustration, had moments of serious doubt and I’ve struggled some days to eat right and get my exercise in.

Some days I flat out fail. And other days I’m crushing it.
_
But the one thing that has remained constant: I’ve never quit. I always start over when I mess up or am struggling.
_
That, my friends, is my weight loss secret. Never stop starting over. Even if you mess up 100 times, stand up, dust yourself off and try again.
_
That voice in your head that tells you you can’t do this is a LIAR. Pat it’s little head and move along! Weight loss is a mind game. And once you can wrap your brain around that concept, you can do anything! ❤️

This has been on my mind a few days, and I have thought a lot about this decision. It comes down to this.
I have heard my daughter and her friends talk about how they arent enough. Not smart enough, thin enough, tall enough, pretty enough, popular enough. ENOUGH!! You are enough!! You are wonderful and amazing and funny and so full of life and potential! No one in this entire world is better suited to be the perfect you but YOU!

Targeting children to sell a program that should be exclusive to MEDICAL SUPERVISION ONLY is beyond disgraceful. It is despicable and mind blowingly tone deaf when launched despite professional feedback urging it not to be because of the danger it represents. And going so low as to post before and after pics of children is incredibly distasteful.
So I have been back and forth about this because I freaking LOVE the community...but I cannot support, or in any way be associated with a company that promotes this. Not only that, but their responses to member concerns were rude and deflecting.
I will absolutely continue to support the wondeful friends I have made here, but I will be losing the ww hashtags and assorted considerations. I will still cheer each of you on and be there for your journey as I hope you will for mine. But I will not support a company who treats it's members with disdain and targets children in this manner.
So with that, I have cancelled my account and will focus on being my best in every way I can.
At the urging of @no.crying.in.cooking (who is amazing btw) I am going to read intuitive eating to see if that will give me some insight and help me truly heal and make true positive changes. And with realizing an ig friend @fitspirationatx (who is also awesome!) is an actual real life friend I feel I need (and want) to shift back into the real world I started retreating from again. So there may finally be some cool content on here! It's a win win! Yeah!
Anyway. Happy weekend and I will see you on the other side!
