Bambi returned to the EARTH Discovery Center this morning to spend some time with Voldemort the western hognose snake. This video has been edited to x2 speed, but you can still tell how snakes will move very slowly and cautiously when investigating something unfamiliar.⠀
You can also see Voldemort flicking her tongue in and out as she checks out Bambi. Snakes have a sensory organ in the base of their nasal cavity called a Jacobson's organ. The snake's tongue collects moisture particles in the air which are then transferred to the Jacobson's organ. This allows snakes to smell the air around them, giving them a better idea of their surroundings. Bambi has been in many areas of the zoo, so it's safe to assume her scent must have been very interesting to Voldemort!
