Thanks for all your love on my self employmentiversary yesterday! Here is the last year in a few pictures. I thought I'd have a little ramble about what the last 12 months has been like as a fully self employed person, after 2 1/2 years of running my business alongside fill time and then part time work. These are 100% honest so sorry that they're not all 'it's great to go out for a coffee every morning!'*
1: it's important to accept help when it's being offered. My mum helped me SO much over the Christmas period and I'm trying to get some sewing help in place for Christmas. I'm an independent person but sometimes you have to let people in!! 2: Christmas. Christmas nearly broke me and to be honest, it's take a while to recover. I suddenly found myself an anxious wreck - and I don't mean that flippantly. I was unable to sleep or eat, has panic attacks multiple times a week and really was not able to engage with anything or anyone for weeks afterwards. I've since had CBT and I'm on anti-anxiety medication still. I told you this wasn't sugar coated.
Note to self: you can't cope with 43 consecutive 10-12hour days. I'm sure some people can but Annah, you can't!
3: I promise it hasn't all been bad!! One slightly unexpected side affect of The Christmas Experience was that I needed to force myself to readjust from working any time I COULD to having time off again. Girl and Bird WAS my time off for years. So, I took up knitting and I LOVE it. It's so calming and satisfying and really does relieve my anxiety when it comes back.
4: take opportunities! I've had two products featured in seasonal campaigns by @notonthehighstreet which has been awesome! It's great to have a specific 'gifting period' in mind to design for.
5: related to the above - just put new things out there. Even though I'm now doing this full time, I still really struggle to have the time to do anything other than orders! But this week I've uploaded my wash bags and I've got some new exciting Valentines products on the way!
*I've done this twice in the whole year
If you've got to the end of this I'm amazed and thank you for listening! What is the most important thing you've learnt in the last year?
