Well this week has been a week full of firsts,
First world championship
First time to race the best of the best
First time to race for the USA
First International race
First time to run my slowest opening Kilo
First PR in a Kilo
And first Crash on the track
I was happy with my Kilo today. I didn’t get last, but let’s face it, a one legged guy in a short race will never fair well going up against racers with two. Getting to see others race is going to help me for the future as I now understand a bit better what I need to work on to make my starts better for the pursuit.
The scratch race was a qualifier and the top 7 got to go to finals. There were ten of us so I only had to beat 3. If you saw the race, as many of you did you got to see me at the front for some of the laps. Wasn’t exactly the game plan. In a scratch race you need to conserve energy and not spend it. With 3 laps to go I was in position of 9. The next two were right in front of me and I needed to go. As I came into turn 3 they drifted above the sprinters Line and I decided to stay on the pole and try and over come them. It’s not really the best or correct place to pass, but I didn’t see any other option. I made my move and as I did the person in front of me moved back down. I tried to slow but it was too late. He hit my front wheel and I corrected up track, but the second hit sent me air borne.
The rest is history. I was on the warm up track and grabbed my glasses and bike and wanted to finish. However track rules dictate with 5 or less laps in a crash the rider is not allowed to finish. It’s a safety factor. So my first DNF.
I’m fine. Just a small scratch. I was only doing 26ish and fell up track.
So it’s been a great experience and I for sure know now where I need to grow and become better. There is always another race and world championship. Roads will be here before I know it.
Thank you for all your help and support to everyone that has been cheering me on and supporting the start of my journey! Couldn’t be here without your help love and support.
