Skyward, by Brandon Sanderson
I LOVE this book!
I have not yet read a book by Brandon Sanderson which I did not thoroughly enjoy, so I went into reading Skyward with high expectations. Skyward did not disappoint me.
The main character Spensa, dreams of joining the ranks of fighter pilots in humanity’s struggle against a mysterious alien race, the Krell, like her father. But joining isn’t as easy as all that. Politics and her family’s past form stumbling blocks she has to overcome, and being part of the military is not glamorous, but dirty and deadly. Things aren’t necessarily as they seem and people in charge don’t always tell the truth. But Spensa has traits which set her apart and she is determined.
I really enjoyed reading Skyward. I found it to be an easy read, one of those books that quickly grip you and you don’t want to put it down. Reading is effortless and reading the last page was bittersweet, I didn’t want to leave that world and those characters behind yet.
The story felt well developed to me. I wasn’t sure at the end if it was a stand-alone novel or not, I felt like it could go either way, but I have seen that Brandon Sanderson is already working on book 2.
I liked the characters, they felt well rounded, nobody was perfect, but I understood everyone’s perspective and motives as I got to know them. I really reading about HUMAN characters. With human faults and who make human mistakes.
There were plenty of unexpected twists which delighted me. Often I like going into reading a book knowing as little as possible, because I love surprises and don’t like guessing book twists in advance. I felt like I already knew a fair bit about the book but it still managed to surprise me and I loved it.
