Little Emad (pictured in a blue T shirt) was so excited about being reunited with his family, after a horrific separation, that he packed his bags days in advance.
Three years ago, the thirteen-year-old #Yazidi boy and his family were taken by an armed group from their home in Sinjar, #Iraq. Emad was separated from his family and held captive -- his relatives didn't even know he was alive. This past July as the battle to retake Mosul raged, Emad was found, emaciated and wracked with injuries, beneath the rubble of the old city.
During the years Emad was held captive, his mother managed to escape and was relocated to #Winnipeg, Canada earlier this year.
After all #Emad has suffered, we knew that nothing could help heal him like the love of his family. Family unity is one of the most important principles for #UNHCR. Our first priority was to reunite Emad with his mother and his siblings, so that he could relieve the stress of separation, and then focus on recovery thanks to specialized help he'll receive in Canada. Emad has been through so much. He deserves peace, recovery and a fresh start.
