We get asked all the time why Faelen is wearing a muzzle. Is he dangerous? Does he bite? I always have to explain that if he were dangerous, I would not bring him out in public. Then I go on to educate the people about what a muzzle does and looks like compared to the head halters I use on Faelen to help control him better and prevent him from pulling so hard. With a head halter, the leash connects to the underside of the halter below the mouth. When the dog pulls away from you, if your leash is on the left side of the head, his forward movement pulls his head to the left. And where the head goes, the body follows. Works the same on the right side. You are effectively turning your dog. These are very effective for strong pulling dogs. Just like halter work on horses. And these halters are also different from muzzles in that the dog can fully open it's mouth. I use a short lead from the halter to his collar as an added safety measure also. Wolfdogs are usually very large and very strong, so we as owners are always doing our best to help make them more manageable and keep them safe. Some may spook quickly in situations that make them uncomfortable. I generally try to avoid things that I know Faelen is unsure of, but sometimes things or places we think nothing about, are a big scary deal to them. Experienced owners should be able to read their body language to know when they are stressed or relaxed.
