My name is Mandy Deveno (@keegandeveno). I grew up in south central Wisconsin on a small dairy farm. As soon as we could handle a gun safely, my parents had all of us kids out hunting upland birds and Whitetails. I am so very thankful for growing up in a hunting family!
I met my husband in Madison, WI shortly after college when his job transferred him there. My family approved when they found out he liked deer and bird hunting, too! It must have been destiny because here we are today 17 years later! Before my husband and I had children we made the decision that one of us would stay home with the kiddos. I left my job as a production scientist at a biotech lab for the amazing opportunity to stay home with both children.
After a few moves across the country for my husband’s job, we ended up in Massachusetts where we both got back into hunting. While living in Massachusetts I was acutely aware of how much adversity hunters face on a daily basis in that state. I became an advocate/instructor/mentor for Gun Owners Action League of Massachusetts and worked with organizations like the NWTF to support women’s firearms safety training and hunting Initiatives throughout the state.
This past summer our family moved to Maryland where I look forward to working with the organization, Maryland Shall Issue, and with local and state wildlife organizations to promote women’s programs.
I look forward to watching my children learn to hunt and become more connected to wildlife conservation as well. My son just completed his hunter’s safety course and my daughter is looking forward to completing her course in the spring.
I enjoy sharing my love of the outdoors with others because I want to see our heritage of hunting, fishing, and wildlife conservation passed onto future generations. There is nothing more satisfying than watching someone learn a new skill and building confidence in themselves. I love reading the stories and questions on Sportswomen Certified and watching this community of women support each other. #SportswomenCertified
