THE INVISIBLE INJURY "I wouldn't know you had a TBI if you didn't tell me." I hear that all the time.
The only physical hints are my gait, balance and speech, but even they are passable.

Survivors of brain injuries have LIFE-LONG  impairments. We are all different. Very few see me overwhelmed, anxious, or sad, even though they are close to the surface every day as I talk with a smile on my face.

Fitness has been amazing for me. Achieving small goals is empowering. Most trauma survivors are searching for some control. I found it by setting fitness goals and working towards them.

Tired of counting how many you take in and how many you burn?
That’s your intuition telling you that it never worked that way and now that hormones may be Cally no the shots it’s all about finding balance in hormones by eating MORE of the right foods (often higher in fat and calories) and exercising LESS as long as it’s hormone balancing for your current status. Any exercise can make you tired. Find the food and exercise that are not a spreadsheet of in and out but that love your body before ( you look forward to them) during ( they’re fun) and after (you’re filled with more energy). Agree?

I almost didn’t run today. Caught a cold/sinus/sore throat thingy. Really debated what my energy needs are for today. Since I have to go teach #bodypump and #cxworx this morning, I decided a nice slow run would get my energy up rather than lying in bed until the last minute. 6.5 easy miles, fasted (of course!) in the cool coastal air was just right. I’ll rest up after I’m done teaching. There is always that fine line between should you or shouldn’t you run when you are not quite well. I just listen to my body, think about what is coming at my for the day, and go from there. Happy Saturday!

I woke up this morning, all my plans for the day had shifted, disappointingly. But then I realized it meant I had a morning to myself. I planned and prepped for a solid workout. I hit three PRs in three different exercises. I PRd on the most total weight lifted in a workout and this is a video of the last reps of the last sets of the morning. Friday afternoon workouts after a looooooong week seem to be more cathartic than any therapy session could ever be. •
•
The funny part is that I was so not in the mood to work out before I started (or any part of the day leading up to it for that matter) but knowing the therapeutic effect that even a mediocre workout would create was worth just getting moving. •
•
My clients know that I’m never an “all or nothing” or “go big or go home” kinda coach because it’s too easy to give yourself that ultimatum and opt for emotional eating while binge watching a Netflix series because you just didn’t have the “go big” enthusiasm ya needed for the former part of that ultimatum. •
•
Instead, I say to barter with yourself and see what you’re willing to do at the minimum to get a bit more than the “go home” part of that equation. Sometimes that’s just being willing to put 10 minutes into a workout (at least mentally, that’s what you’re willing at first) but that’ll usually turn into much more than 10 minutes just because you were willing to do more than just nothing. •
•
Today wasn’t a day that opted for 10 minutes, but I was willing to just go through the motions until it clicked organically for me which it did and turned into an awesome workout that I really needed. •
•
If you’re falling prey to the all or nothing mentality and that’s keeping you from getting started that day, start small and set something you’re willing to do and see if it turns into more momentum. Don’t view it as a waste of time if you can’t have a record breaking workout every time or you’ll let yourself be defeated in your goals before you give yourself the chance to move.

I have been doing the GETFIERCE class @move_fitness_club every Saturday morning and I absolutely LOVE it. Story time! In January, we had a flood at our house. I turned on the dishwasher and left to pick up the kids from school. By the time we got back, water was stretched from the kitchen into the living room, and flooding into the basement. 😭😭. It was epic. We had to rip out all the drywall and carpet from our basement, replace flooring on the main floor, etc. ad nauseam —- and then our home insurance dropped us! First two pics show part of the destroyed basement.*

We love to make lemonade out of 🍋 all up in here, though. Almost 6 months later, and after lots of work from a fabulous contractor, we are rebuilt (and we found some new home insurance lol) Making things better than they were Pre Flood! We moved the office upstairs so we can move the gym from the garage to the basement. Swipe left for phase 1 of the basement gym — now complete. Floors are down and mirrors are in. Now, we just need to move in the equipment...that’ll be a good workout in itself!! 😂😂. I can’t wait to start coaching and training down here. I started my business to help women who wouldn’t otherwise go to the gym. Time, childcare, knowledge and intimidation are just a few things that hold us back from working out. I get it, I’ve been there and I don’t want others to struggle if I can help.

➡️I go to their homes, workplaces or meet outside. No commute or leaving kids in daycare.
➡️I bring all the equipment.
➡️I give them a plan outside our time together and provide 24/7 access for questions.
I train, support, and motivate them while providing that convenience and accountability.

Fitness should FEEL good. So should YOU.💕

So so grateful I took a leap of faith to start this business and have the opportunity to make others feel good and fit fitness in. Taking that leap was scary but it’s the best decision I’ve made yet (besides that husband and baby boy of mine 😉).

A few days ago I posted a stretch for the upper back. This weighted version is also great to help you get into a good position. You can push against the weight to pull your ribs down and tuck your butt.

Start with the weight on the floor, reach overhead and pin your arms underneath. Begin with a 30ish second hold. Then push up into the weight. Don't actually move the weight just act with the intention of lifting it. Then pull yourself further into the stretch position. Finally relax and hold.

I’m usually not a #machinehog, but when it’s 4:30 am on a Saturday, ain’t nobody waiting on Not a Nary machine, cause ain’t nobody here but my crazy butt 😩😭. I’ll be working all morning and volunteering this afternoon so #earlybirdgetstheburn. I've done a lot of weird things. Here's a list for reference:
1. I've eaten escargot and haggis (snails and sheep heart, liver, lungs respectively). Both were pretty good, especially haggis.
2. Hitchhiked multiple times - all my rides were so nice!
3. Crashed a graduation party for someone I'd never met just for fun and chatted it up with their grandma, and then crashed another party of the friendliest Mormons I'd ever met (taking it back a bit, right @eirousseau ?)
4. Eaten an entire 1/2 gallon of ice cream in one setting
5. Jumped aboard a trip to see Trump's inauguration at the last second with a government class
6. Crawled through a series of pipes underneath my university (is this the weirdest thing we have done, @alyssa.cobb14 ?)
7. Hiked over 2,200 miles and through 14 different states in 6 months
8. Been in a Michael Jackson themed beauty pageant (keepin' it real Indiana)
9. Dressed up as Effie Trinket and played the clarinet in a middle school band Halloween concert.......at the age of 25
10. WORKED OUT AT A HOTEL GYM .

Okay, maybe the last one (or several - this list has taught me that I'm kind of safe) doesn't seem that weird, but for me, it might be the weirdest thing out there. Hotel = vacation. Vacation = this girl ain't doing a blessed thing. But I actually enjoyed it! It was nice! I feel great now as I embark on my day with the youth group. This is a TOTALLY SUSTAINABLE lifestyle and even though today was my least favorite workout, I am so glad I did it. Sticking to my goals never felt so good. (Also this picture was not amidst my workout, it was after. I definitely do NOT look like this during a workout, but I forgot to get the pic earlier). .

‼️BEAT THE BLOAT - pt.2⤵️

🧘🏼‍♀️The amount of questions I received on my “Yoga Poses to Beat The Bloat” post warranted a pt. 2 on how to beat the bloat (and for those of you who asked if Yoga actually can help with bloating and digestion —> YES, 100%)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👩🏼‍⚕️While many of you may be able to beat the bloat following these simple suggestions, I do want to note there are a number of medical conditions that could be contributing to your battle with bloating. Ask your doc about pelvic floor dysfunction, IBS, food intolerances etc. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉Now for those of us who experience bloating randomly and aren’t sure why, it may be related to the following:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⚠️Sugar alcohol’s or processed foods (Sugar free gum / sugar free foods, or even processed foods such as certain protein powder can cause bloating)
⚠️Not enough, or in rare occasions, too much fiber. Easy ways to increase fiber intake are through higher fiber foods such as veggies or fiber supplements.
⚠️Raw cruciferous veggies (such as kale, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage..) can cause gas / bloating, while cooking them can help make them easier to digest.
⚠️Salt causes bloating simply because it causes you to retain extra water.
⚠️Eating too much at once can cause excess bloating and discomfort
⚠️Irregular sleep patterns and stress can also play a role in bloating and digestive health.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition to monitor the potential causes above a few things that may help:
✅Drinking plenty of water / hot tea
✅Regular exercise
✅Yoga specifically geared towards digestive support
✅Eating smaller meals
✅Taking a digestive enzyme supplement ✅Managing stress / getting plenty of rest
