okay, I’ll play! I was tagged by @zohrastar in the #7books7days challenge and I’ll begin with the one I just finished re-reading.
I first read Assata Shakur’s autobiography in the 90’s and it had a tremendous impact on me. It helped me understand systemic oppression and how it plays out on the personal level. It helped me understand how important history is in what’s happening now, and how you have to know where you’ve been if you want to chart where you’re going.
In re-reading it, I was astounded by how many parallels there are between what was going on in Nixon’s America and what’s going on today. Even though I knew many of them, to see something written during a time when no one could imagine we’d be where we are now was a real gut punch.
There are forwards in here by Angela Davis and Lennox Hinds. Besides being beautifully written, with lovely rest stops for poetry, this is absolutely required reading for anyone who wants to understand how oppression works on all levels. Please buy it if you can, but it’s also available as a free download so there is no excuse not to read it.
