Stand up and celebrate #WorldOceansDay!! Please join me, @cristinamittermeier and some of the @sea_legacy team at the @paulnicklengallery on 347 West Broadway #NYC this Saturday as we celebrate #worldoceansweek. We felt very lucky to have Dr. Sylvia Earle in the gallery this week. She is such an eloquent speaker and it rings so true when she says “No Blue, No Green, No Us”. Every second breath we take comes from the ocean. We can either learn to hold our breaths or perhaps we should just protect the lungs and heart of our planet. The concept of sending someone to Mars is pretty cool but why not put that same energy, time and money into protecting our life sustaining, complex and fragile life support system that surrounds us everyday. The air, the water, the soil, the food, the climate are all right here…....balanced to perfection through 4 billion years of evolution and yet we treat it with such disregard and abuse. Come and learn about the things we can do for our planet.

Lol 😝 #when u say I'm too aggressive #lol #amaz #creature #photograher of sea life #seal #elephantseal #sea #sealife #Repost with @Repostlyapp Just minutes old, a newborn elephant seal pup opens its eyes for the first time and greets its new world of ice, snow and wind in South Georgia, Antarctica. At birth, an elephant seal weighs approximately 50 pounds but within 3 weeks, it may reach an astonishing 400 pounds from its mothers rich milk. She will then wean her pup and head back to sea to replenish her own depleted resources. On this #worldoceansweek , let’s celebrate all creatures in the sea and realize the fragility of our oceans and how we are all interconnected. Our oceans are the foundation of all life on Earth. Photograph by paulnicklen // Happy #worldoceansweek and #worldoceansday. A Gentoo penguin cautiously peeks beneath the oceans surface in fear of leopard seals. As I reflect on my many years spent both on and in our great oceans of the world I look back with such gratitude but I also realize all of the work ahead. When we stand on the shoreline and look out over the sea, we assume that all is well, however, when you lower your mask below the surface you see a very different story. You learn that half the coral reefs are gone, 90 percent of the big fish are gone, ice shelves in Antarctica are breaking up at unprecedented rates and sea ice is at its lowest extent in recorded history. I urge everyone to learn about how vital our oceans are to all life on Earth. As the great Dr. Sylvia Earle says, “No Blue, No Green, No Us”. #followme on paulnicklen and come and visit us this Saturday at the paulnicklengallery in #NYC and learn about how we can better protect our oceans. The summer season of exploration got off to an exciting start in June as #TheExplorersClub hosted its first ever #WorldOceansWeek alongside and in cooperation with the @UnitedNations #OceanConference.

As the U.N. hosted thousands of scientists, researchers, artists. and explorers from around the world for days of intensive dialogue on the importance of preserving our oceans ecosystems and resources, #TEC and its extraordinary members hosted scores of #OceansWeek attendees from early morning to late at night with a series of prominent lectures, film screenings and social programs designed to enhance the total Oceans Week experience.

We invite you now to join Club President Ted Janulis for an exciting “up close and personal” look at the important role TEC played in Oceans Week. The video report is now available via the link in our bio. Beds of sea pens can be found extending off the ocean floor like an underwater forest on both the west and east coast of Canada, creating essential habitat and refuge for many little critters.
Sea pens are one of six species to be protected under the proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Laurentian Channel off the southwest coast of Newfoundland, a proposal that’s expected to be announced this month by Fisheries and Oceans Canada for public input. However, this MPA will still be open to oil and gas activity and shipping, except for a small area marked off to protect sea pens like these. Allowing destructive activity of this nature sets an incredibly poor precedent for future MPAs in Canada. “As the process moves forward (in the East), regulations/negotiations go up and protection level goes down,” said Linda Nowlan, an environmental lawyer at @wcelaw. “If you have an oil rig in Banff National Park, people are going to see it, and they are going to say, ‘Bah! This makes no sense!’” echoes geographer Rodolphe Devillers in @hakaiinstitute Magazine’s article, "Canada’s New Marine (Less) Protected (Than It Could Have Been) Area". Reduced boundaries and cutting corners to allow destructive industry like oil and gas ignores the very foundation that provides for coastal life.

Conservation takes a team and teams come in many forms. Each one of our partner organizations that we are acknowledging as part of World Oceans Week has a team, or several, working towards specific goals with passion, purpose and a knowing that the ocean, and the planet, needs our help. The teams within these organizations make up a larger team of conservation warriors who dedicate more than just time and expertise to their work. They bring heart. This larger team, in turn, creates a global team and with that, there are no limits to what we can do to ensure the future vitality of our oceans.⠀

Today we are celebrating The Marine Conservation Institute, @savingoceans. The Marine Conservation Institute has many important projects underway, with a current focus on 1) The Global Ocean Refuge System, GLORES, that is designed to catalyze strong protection for 30% of the ecosystems in each marine biogeographic region of the world’s oceans by 2030 and 2) MPAtlas.org, an online resource and webapp that lets users discover the world's marine protected areas and see amounts and types of protections within regions around the global ocean.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Thank you to The Marine Conservation Institute for this, and other important work. ⠀⠀
