AIIMS to use drones for cornea tissue transportation⠀

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, is looking for the possibility of using drones to transport corneas to hospitals for transplantation surgery. Using drones will help in saving precious time that sometimes gets wasted in traffic. Six hours is the ideal time within which the corneas need to be transplanted from the donor.⠀

“It’s just an idea at the moment, as part of the memorandum of understanding that AIIMS and IIT-D have signed for exchange of research and innovation. It’s too early to comment on how feasible the idea will be in the long run,” said Dr. JS Titiyal, professor, department of ophthalmology, AIIMS. Corneal transplant surgeries are the most common transplant surgeries in comparison to eye donations which cannot meet the demand at all. Around 26,682 got corneal transplants last year out of 100,000 patients.⠀

US is testing autonomous drones for border patrol⠀

Planck Aerosystems will supply the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents with an unmanned aerial detection system. The CBP will test autonomous drones that will be able to provide situational awareness for agents working between ports of entry.⠀

Planck has been working with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) to build and test prototypes of its autonomous small unmanned aerial vehicles, or sUAV. The CBP has been promoting biometric screening at airports while issuing a call for biometric vendor partners. Furthermore, the company offers the ability to operate autonomously from a moving vehicle or vessel on land or at sea. Their technologies are designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, real-time situational awareness, and force protection. Drone autonomy is basically based on computer vision and navigation facilities.⠀

“Through a combination of integrated technologies, including full-motion video, automatic target detection and geolocation, Planck seeks to provide CBP agents with a portable, ruggedized detection system that provides real-time situational awareness in the field,” explained S&T in its announcement of the project.⠀

Microwave Guns May Fry Drones in Mid-Air⠀

The U.S Army has plans to develop a high-powered microwave weapon as a part of a broad counter-drone strategy. A microwave would short out the electronics of a drone in flight, causing it to crash. The weapon’s broad firing arc means it could take out many drones at once, defeating enemy drone swarms. The weapon is part of the service’s Indirect Fires Protection Capability (IFPC), a series of weapons designed to shoot down enemy artillery shells, rockets, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. IPFC will also include a 150-kilowatt laser weapon. The Pentagon has researched high powered microwave weapons for years, but the threat of drone swarms may have presented it with the perfect opportunity.⠀

Radiation from microwaves can disrupt or destroy electronic equipment exposed to them, “cooking” internal circuits much in the same way a fork or other metal objects placed in a microwave oven will cause the oven’s electronics to meltdown.⠀
The military is preparing for the eventuality of facing swarms of suicide drones on the battlefield, each carrying explosive payloads or prepared to make a suicide attack.⠀

Xcel Energy Drones to Inspect Urban Power Lines⠀

An expanded waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration will allow Xcel Energy to expand the use of drones to inspect power lines. The FAA’s relationship with North Dakota, a state with 760,000 people and ample farmland, allows for looser regulations. In North Dakota, if a drone malfunctions, it’s unlikely it will land in a neighbourhood or collide with a piloted aircraft. The utility has been using drones to inspect transmission lines under several limited waivers.⠀

“It has been a challenge with all the separate waivers and it was hard to pick up the speed and momentum, but this really is a turning point for us on that transmission side of the effort,” said North Dakota Xcel manager Mark Nisbet. He said that the company has permission to fly long distances over power lines in eight states, including Minnesota.⠀

Kolkata Municipality Uses Drones to Detect Mosquito Breeding Spots⠀

The slum areas have been affected due to heavy rains that have led to the collection of water in small areas. Hence, in order to deal with the issue of mosquito breeding, the Kolkata Municipality in Bidhannagar has started deploying a drone to fly around and locate mosquito larvae, dirt, and stagnant water. The civic workers often fail to reach the rooftops of high-rise buildings, where temporary water patches, empty plastic teacups, and water containers serve as potential mosquito breeding grounds. The roofs are under the control of the builders, who do not give access to the civic staff. Drones will help them identify the areas that have become mosquito breeding grounds. Over the years, the breeding season of the mosquitoes has changed. This has caused serious problems to the civic bodies in carrying out anti-larvae drives.⠀

The district magistrate has provided to deploy drones in North 24-Parganas, where there has been an outbreak of dengue in some pockets. Many people living in Ashoknagar, Habra, Barrackpore and Naihati are suffering from dengue.⠀
The exercise started from Bali Math in Duttabad area of Salt Lake in the presence of Mayor Krishna Chakraborty and several health officials. Chakraborty said, “It is raining heavily here and water accumulates from place to place which makes it difficult to monitor and detect mosquito breeding sites.”⠀
Moreover, according to the municipality, using smoke and oil (to clear mosquito larvae) faces many problems.⠀

Trade War drastically affected the Chinese Drones Industry⠀

DJI has made several alterations to its online catalogue and ratcheted up prices of a handful of its drones in the starting of September owing to the trade war. The China-based drone maker, DJI, is passing on the cost of President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs on imported Chinese goods to American buyers.⠀

Most of the products on DJI’s online store were either taken down or went out of stock, some of these returned on Tuesday-with about 15% price bump.⠀
DJI’s US store showed a 13% increase in the prices of the Mavic 2 line-up, which is slightly under the 15 per cent figure President Donald Trump announced on Twitter late last month. Thus, Mavic 2 now costs $919 instead of $799.⠀
Similarly, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro — which was crowned as the best drone of 2019 — will set you back by $1,729, up from $1,499.⠀

China’s drones kill 98% pests on farms⠀

A military of drones deployed to combat a crop-devouring pest in a southern space of China has recorded a mortality change of as excessive as 98%. XAG, a Guangzhou-based drone maker, teamed up with Germany’s Bayer Crop Science in a drone swarm operation to kill the autumn armyworm in China’s Guangxi area. China’s autonomous drones, loaded with low-toxicity insecticide, have additionally efficiently managed pests in a government-led operation within the southwest province of Yunnan. “It’s the ‘crop-devouring monster’ that assaults over 80 crop varieties,” XAG mentioned in an announcement Monday.⠀

Most farmers resort to conventional insecticide sprayers, which fail to affect the “ravenous, fast-moving fall armyworm” that can fly as far as 100 kilometres within a night. However, in addition, conventional insecticides expose crops to harmful chemical substances.⠀

Drones take on the crop-killing pest⠀
The autumn armyworm, a crop-devouring pest, has unfolded from the Americas to Africa and Asia, gorging on rice, corn, greens, cotton, etc. Since arriving in China, it has affected 950,000 hectares of crops in 24 provinces as of mid-August. Outbreaks at 90% of the affected areas at the moment are beneath management, a report stated. According to local media, drones have effectively helped to control this spread of pests also found in some cornfields in the northern province of Henan.⠀

VTOL cargo drone from Elroy Air tested successfully⠀

Elroy Air, an autonomy and logistics company expanding vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aerial cargo systems, announced the successful completion of its first full-scale system flight test. The 1215 lb (551 Kg) prototype reached a height of 10 feet and hovered for 64 seconds before landing safely.⠀
The test was completed at 9:14 AM PST on August 14th, 2019 at McMillan Airfield at Camp Roberts, CA in partnership with the Naval Postgraduate School. The aircraft was remotely piloted by the company’s lead test pilot.⠀

VTOL⠀
“Today is an important step toward the future of logistics,” said David Merrill, CEO of Elroy Air. “Since the earliest days of powered flight people have wanted to use the skies for convenient, rapid cargo transport to anywhere. The airport-dependence of traditional manned air cargo options shows that air cargo still has great opportunity to evolve! Autonomous VTOL cargo systems will make the dream of ultra-responsive logistics possible because they decouple air cargo from airports. These large cargo systems are about to become mainstream, and the Elroy Air team is leading the industry with our development of the Chaparral aerial cargo system.”⠀

Britain’s version of the Predator B drone can battle terrorists⠀

Britain unveiled their version of the Predator B drone called the Protector drone. This new armed surveillance drone can now strike terrorists with precision missiles, laser-guided bombs, and will be able to remain airborne for up to 40 hours.⠀

Game-changing technology⠀
The Protector done coupled with Remotely Piloted Air System (RPAS) can now take off, land anywhere in the world controlled via satellite link from a remote base. Moreover, with anti-icing and lightning protection, missions in adverse weather conditions are also possible. Thus, RAF pilots will be able to attack targets anywhere around the world from their home base in Waddington, Lincolnshire, without having to deploy ground crews.⠀

The MoD announced that the first Predator B lookalike flew from Yuma in Arizona to Creech Air Force Base in Nevada. From the Creech Base, the RAF’s 39 Squadron has been flying missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere since 2007 using the older MQ-9 Reaper drones. Air Vice-Marshal Harv Smyth, commander of the RAF’s intelligence and surveillance forces, was impressed with the minimal after-flight attention the aircraft required.⠀

The Drone Dilemma Part 2: Trust⠀

When faced with a problem, regulations are the first tool of choice for governments. The issue with regulations is that not only they can be inefficient but also ineffective. Therefore, it is necessary to look for other solutions beyond regulations. But first, we have to look at why these regulations have been adopted in the first place.⠀

Trust⠀
Building a drone is a hobby project. Stopping a drone is a military one.⠀
Given the ease with which they can be built or purchased off-the-shelf, drones are incredibly hard to take down. There is no single piece of technology that can take down a rogue drone effectively under all circumstances. The most effective solutions cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars. In such an asymmetric scenario, any deficit of trust leads to a total mistrust of the device and its operators. The authorities can never trust drones because if it is being operated by a rogue agent they are powerless to stop them.⠀

The consequence is the regulations. In India, under the new regulations, there are regulatory checks at multiple levels:⠀
1. Only NPNT-certified drones can be built or imported⠀
2. Identity verification and security clearance approval is required while purchasing a drone⠀
3. Security clearance approval is required while obtaining an Operator Permit (UAOP)⠀
4. Pilot License verification is required while obtaining permission to fly⠀
5. It is mandatory to submit logs after the flight is completed⠀

Needless to say, this is a bureaucratic nightmare for drone operators. Many applications require approval from multiple departments. The fact that inter-departmental communication is virtually non-existent makes matters worse.⠀

Survey of India releases a massive tender for 300 drones⠀

On 25th July 2019 Survey of India released a tender for the procurement of 300 drones to scale and create a high-resolution National Topographic Database. This action has been undertaken as part of the National Map Policy of 2005. The pre-bid conference for this tender took place on 1st August 2019.⠀

The official document published by the Survey of India highlights the bare minimum hardware and software requirements a drone must meet to be eligible. As these drones will be used to map the topography of the entire country, certain specifications are supposed to be strictly adhered to.⠀

NPNT now a primary requirement⠀
Drone suppliers will have to tune their UAVs to match the standards set by the Survey of India. This includes Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL), Altitude cap, Speed cap, Mapping sensors, and many more technical standpoints. Apart from that, UAVs must encompass the NPNT (No Permission-No Takeoff) system, which was introduced on 1st December 2018. Bidders will have to provide a certificate of NPNT compliance.⠀

Altius-U makes its maiden flight in Russia⠀

Another week, another Russian drone makes its first successful take-off. The defence ministry published footage of the maiden flight of a high-endurance reconnaissance UAV called Altius-U. Altius-U is the final form of this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), created as a result of the development and testing of a number of prototypes. The flight took place for 32 minutes at an altitude of up to 800 meters in fully automatic mode at one of the test aerodromes. All systems of the complex worked properly, the Ministry of Defence noted. The 6-tonne drone is meant as a high-endurance reconnaissance platform. It can remain airborne for more than 24 hours and has a satellite uplink for control, allowing it to be piloted from a great distance.⠀

According to the report, the complex is capable of performing an entire spectrum of reconnaissance missions using optical, radio engineering and radar and can stay in the air for more than a day. A feature of the complex is the use of a satellite control channel, making the radius of its application practically unlimited.⠀

Little Ripper deploys croc-spotting AI drones⠀

Co-founder of Little Ripper Group, Paul Scully-Power, told that the Queensland government was approached by the company to help keep beachgoers safe in the water and on land from crocodiles. “The Queensland government said, ‘Hey do we have a challenge for you and asked can you spot crocodiles for us?’ Crocodiles are slinky people that like dark, muddy water, so we took on that challenge,” Paul said.⠀
The shark detection drones earlier used by Little Ripper Group is now being used to spot crocodiles in Queensland. Hence, a trial was conducted between Surf Life Saving Queensland and the Little Ripper Group to identify, monitor, and track the movement of crocodiles in November.⠀

Making use of AI⠀
New “Smart Artificial Intelligence” developed in conjunction with the University of Technology Sydney, uses an AI(Artificial Intelligence) system that was originally designed to detect sharks in real-time. This system was unveiled by the company on August 20, 2019, at the Amazon Web Services Public Sector Summit in Canberra. This could also imply that Ripper Group drones can also operate and identify swimmers autonomously.⠀

Commercial drones may soon fly in Japan⠀

The new drone legislation is proposed to be introduced in 2022 by the Japanese government. The legislation will create an online drone registration system to fly commercial drones in populated areas of Japan. This will significantly reduce the paperwork which is currently needed. The drone registration system is designed to support the expansion of commercial drone operations such as online deliveries, and enable drone operators to be traced.⠀

The registration will be an online portal based system and the drone permit will only be valid for a certain period of time. To register, an applicant would have to enter the name of the owner, the user, and the ID number assigned to the drone upon purchase. The government is also planning safety requirements and certification for drone operators. The country, presently, bans unmanned aerial vehicles from operating in heavily populated areas without a permit. This requires multiple documents to be filed with information including the make of the drone, the purpose, the date, the route, and other details.⠀

Drones on the farm: Using facial recognition to keep cows healthy⠀

Facial recognition is good for more than security features on Facebook and organizing photo albums. The artificial intelligence-based technology could soon help ensure that milk in the fridge came from a well-fed cow. That’s right, facial recognition now works on cows. Agricultural company Cargill and machine-vision company Cainthus announced a partnership that will create an A.I. system for dairy farmers.⠀

The image-recognition system is able to recognize a cow using both the animal’s pattern of spots and the cow’s actual face. However, the system takes a few seconds to recognize an individual cow.⠀

What is the goal exactly?⠀
The goal of the system is to identify each cow, locate it in a pasture and measure vital health information like weight, size, facial features, and physical activity. Giving drones the ability to monitor just how much food and water each cow receives turns, what would be several weeks, manual processes into something that happens almost in real-time. With that information, dairy farmers can anticipate issues and use the information to adjust feeding — all factors that can help increase a farm’s efficiency, along with preventing animal loss.⠀
“We’re actually trying to quantify the behavioural and physiological changes,” said a spokesperson. “If we want to use [UAVs] as a monitoring device, how does it affect them? Is it positive, negative or neutral?”⠀

American Drone Shot Down Over Yemen⠀

It has been the second time in three months that the US has lost an unnamed aerial vehicle over Yemen. An American military drone was shot down on Tuesday 20th August, in Yemen, southeast of the capital, Sana. Iranian-backed Houthi forces claimed credit for the downing of the unmanned drone, an MQ-9 Reaper. In a statement on Wednesday, the United States Central Command said it was investigating the incident, which it said occurred in “authorized airspace over Yemen.⠀

This is not the first time an American drone has been shot down in Yemen. In June, the U.S. military said that Houthi rebels had shot down a U.S. government-operated drone with assistance from Iran.U.S. forces have occasionally launched drone and airstrikes against Yemen’s al Qaeda branch, known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).⠀

The group has taken advantage of a four-year-old war between the Houthi movement and President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s Saudi-backed government to try to strengthen its position in the impoverished country. One of the officials said that it appeared that the armed military drone, made by California-based General Atomics, had been shot down by a surface-to-air missile operated by the Iran-aligned Houthi group.⠀
