A call to arms. Part III.
With a yelp and a cry, we heard the forward rank shout in anguish "Ambush!!" At that very same moment, arrows from the distant bush line swept in like a monsoon of iron.
I held my shield tall as the silent rain ricochet against our steel wall. I didn't dare to look, not because of a lack of courage but the sheer stupidity of the idea!
The man to my right glimpsed only for a moment, leaning to his left he instantly took a bolt to his eye. He spasmed at first, dropping his shield as blood gushed from his socket. Remarkably he wasn't dead, he fell to his knees only to yank the shaft from his eye. I couldn't believe it, I couldn't help but smirk at the man's utter ferocity. He roared as if it was a day of fire and brimstone!
But that sight of heroism was short lived as he took three more arrows to his chest, Keeling over onto his fallen shield and forever laying to rest his burdened bravery. I held strong against the tide, we all did. Caught in a moment of chaos, men would fall left and right, but are reaction was swift, pulling our ranks and forming our wall once more.
Our feet stamping on what once was a man of honour, but from the deep we heard a rattle of steel and a thumping of drums, and as their lines drew from the mist enveloped forest, we knew their menace would bring only our retribution!
