October 2, 2012 - Cycling along the most southern part of the Taklamakan Desert, with the snow covered peaks of the KunLun Mountain range, I had so many beautiful interactions with people. Popular media would like to tell you that Uyghurs of the south, Khotan, are especially dangerous and are extremist Islamists, but I saw the exact opposite. There was the curious group of boys cuddled up on a motorbike. There was the young woman that chased after me from a 小卖部 (little market) asking me if I was Han Chinese (as she never had seen a foreigner), the wedding going down the street, children playing in the trees, and the teen boy that had leaned nto his father's chest to watch TV, as his father petted his head and cradled and hugged him as if he was a very large infant. There were the non-stop police checkpoints, that at the time, my Mandarin and Work Permit seemed to be the only saving grace to letting me through.
