My thoughts: ***Overall, this was a fun read that simultaneously tackled some serious topics. The main character, Janna, is incredibly multifaceted and relatable, and witnessing her navigate life through a multitude of intersections was eye-opening. In fact, I would say the strongest aspect of this novel was its diverse, nuanced characters, as well as Janna's interactions with them. A quick read, but almost too quick; my only real criticism (that is hardly a criticism) is I wanted more. By that I mean it had a great pace/flow until about the last quarter of the book, but then the ending, which was actually great, felt rushed into and left me wanting. Loved the dialogue, Ali's effortless style of writing, the characters' relationships/interactions, Janna's growth, and the messages I left with. (Also, please someone make the Niqabi Ninjas a real thing.)
You might enjoy this book/series if you're interested in: #representationmatters, #ownvoices, books about/penned by Muslim women, fiction, multicultural perspectives, identity exploration, first person perspective/single narrative
Potential triggers: Not graphic, but character discusses sexual assault/attempted sexual assault and has periodic flashbacks.
Would I recommend? Yes. Deserves more attention for tackling so many different issues/subjects and just being an enjoyable read, in general.
