The Cruel Prince~ Holly Black
Cruel Prince wasn’t off to a great start when it made me feel as though I was too old for young adult novels. The three girls seemed boring, the faerie realm seemed generic. There is an element of chick-lit to it, where you enjoy it, its fast paced, plot twists, and enough (but still surface level) character development to be low-key invested, but not too invested by the time the book is up.
Taryn and her shallow behavior, lack of loyalty, and self-interest made her and Locke being a thing completely expected (also, you could tell Taryn was that kind of person from the start). The twist with Carden was also expected. Chapter six where you’re supposed to understand the kind of abuse Jude suffered at the hands of the faeries was clumsy; there were better was to exhibit it.
*What I did like was that Black did not shy away from other details in the story, such as the time Jude was forced to eat faerie food and had her salt thrown away. But she did sometimes fail to get things to linger on, such as any feeling from Jude after she kills Valerian. While the last chapter in the book was the best one, and Oriana my favorite character, I think feel as though it could have been ended at chapter 26, with more time given to the events before it. However, I would not wait for the next book had this one been ended like this the ways its written*
Overall, I think it’s a fun quick read, and I do hope think that it has ACOTAR potential (as in EVERYONE LOVED ACOMAF AND FORGOT ACOTAR)
