This is an important message, and triggered by an email from someone who wanted to do Yoga to lose weight. YOGA (ASANA) WILL NOT HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. Do not believe any of the ‘Yoga for weight-loss’ marketing, particularly brandished around this time of year. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

It used to be thought that Yoga increased your resting metabolic rate, but actually research suggests it reduces it. So if you don’t change your diet, overtime Yoga could make you gain weight. THAT’S SCIENCE. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

There is Yoga that will be in the fat burn zone but I won’t teach that. There are also far more effective ways to burn fat than Yoga. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

If you want to try Yoga to lose weight, by all means do it. Hopefully in time you’ll feel all the other actual benefits, including becoming comfortable in your own skin. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

And perhaps becoming more aware of your body will help you feel the effects of what you put into it, so you’ll reduce your intake, make healthier choices, and lose weight that way. Seriously? Asana has not be proven to cure any diseases. I wrote a couple of years ago an article on the difference between Yoga and Pilates, with the conclusion being ‘marketing’. And I still think I’m right. Some of the claims made about Yoga are seriously misleading and in fact ruddy bloody dangerous! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Yoga/asana are just a facilitator. You do the work. They on not going to ‘fix’ anything on your behalf. You do that. They are not a quick cure to your problems. Any problems you have took years to develop and unpicking that may well take a similar amount of time. Same with drugs. Are you really fixing something if you don’t get to the root cause but are effectively putting a temporary mask over it?

Anything I teach I try to have backed by either science or experience and if it’s experience I will say that. No misleading claims made. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

The [evolve] program was developed because I realised Yoga and Pilates were not actually fixing the root cause of people’s issues. It’s great to strengthen or mobilise but what is it that actually got you into this need in the first place. More often than not it’s your lifestyle and daily habits. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

So signup for a quick fix or believe unproven claims. Or evaluate your life deeply and fully to find your root causes. Hey influencers, nobody asked you to be an "ESA" to the world 24/7. My god. This is why the generation before us think we just want handouts. But I guess getting paid to post body shapes and be in comment pods isn't getting you far after all. Please, volunteer and/or go back to school if you supposedly want to work with people in jails or children who are underprivileged. If you're getting DMs about really heavy stuff, direct them to an appropriate, QUALIFIED person to help them. Geezes. I'm hating IG more by the second nowadays! And standing up for yourself - is Jade oppressed or getting bullied?! 🙄

Padmasana (Lotus pose), circa 2013

This was not an easy pose for me. I had to work at it for at least an hour before I could get into it to only be able to hold it long enough for a photo before my ankle screams, my calves ache and my hips crackle.

I was always in awe of those who could easily place their right foot across and stack their left foot over and even more impressed with those who could do it while upside down in a headstand or slip their arms between their calves and take kukutasana. In my mind, my calves, thighs and ankles were either too thick, my forearms too short or my core not strong enough and in my yoga teacher’s mind, I needed to work on opening my hips more. So there I was chasing more and more external hip rotation because to fit in and be accepted into this lineage of yoga, I needed to do this pose.

I look at this pic today and cringe 😖 because nothing about this position is good for my body. Shortly after I started this style practice, I developed some ugly sensations in my low back and right hip that ran down my leg and lingered behind the calf. The senior teachers and my ashtangi buddies told me this is normal when you first start the practice, “everyone goes thru it.”

Thankfully, being the rebel that I am, I was not willing to accept the pain and buy into “everyone goes thru it” and listened to my body and said buh-bye. I can’t exactly say that this pose was the sole cause of my chronic low back, hip, and IT band pain (that I still get today) but I know that when I work on internal hip rotation, my pain goes away 🤔🤔🤔. Today I’m much more anatomically wiser than I was 5 years ago so definitely no more lotus for me and most likely for you either. You’re welcome 😋

I really would like to hear your views, especially if you are new qualified teacher or new student who may not have came from a great supportive yoga community . . .

I just read article on @yogiapproved "This Yoga Teacher is Sick of the Yoga Community’s Bullsh*t" written by Michelle Stanger @arifishmama where she shares very disturbing behaviour she came across among Yoga Teachers. (I will post link in my stories). . .

She reminds us we all supposed to be full of love, light, and acceptance, instead of being hateful, hurtful, discouraging “yogis” who know the best. .

There are many different styles of yoga, there are new yoga trends and hybrid classes and yoga has certainly become more “Westernised” to fit our modern culture. And personally I'm all about that, I'm not going to pretend yoga is my religion nor that I have any altars in my home/studio to worship the gurus. .

I disconnected from all accounts that were so holy and full of the highest truth that made me feel small and uncomfortable. .

Same way I disconnect from people who are that way in a real life. I don't like anything that reminds me of a cult and if I step to class or studio that has that vibe, I'm out. . . .

I couldn't agree more with Michelle - we need to come together, jump off of our high yoga teaching horses and agree that we are all practicing yoga in our own way and there is nothing wrong with that. Each to their own. .

There is enough room for all of us and respect towards each other goes long way. .

it's okay to not be okay.
it's okay that loads of therapy isn't enough.
it's okay that yoga and meditation alone are not enough.
it's okay if you don't feel like you're enough.
you are.
and maybe this pep talk is for me.
and the shame i still can't entirely wipe because i rely on this bitter pill to maintain a life that i'm able to get out of bed.
it doesn't cure me from my depression and anxiety. but it helps me focus on living and healing that shame with a clearer mind. my depression and anxiety has been a lifelong battle that i couldn't admit until recent years. it's chronic. it's not just going to magically go away. it's constant maintenance and checking in with myself.
and reminding myself that i am enough. i am putting in the work. and it's okay to not be okay 🖤

I don’t love this practice like I used to, but for longer then I’m thrilled to admit our relationship was more of the do-too-much-then-sit-around-and-wonder-why-it’s-not-texting-you-back-fast-enough kind. Pretty fear and insecurity driven, which spoiler alert is the foundation to exactly zero healthy relationships. (Prove it to me plz that I’ve been dedicated to you for something I can seeee!) I’ve tried to break up with it a few times, but something realer than the handstands or twists or #igyoga eyerolls always brings me back. Maybe the discipline, or the community, or the truths that seem to come out of absolutely fckng nowhere mid-pigeon. I don’t know. But I’m still here for it.
