Yoga doesn’t have to be complicated! Here’s a simple yet effective stretch for the muscles in your back, as well as the triceps 💪🏻

Start from a tabletop position on all 4s with a neutral spine, then, keeping your hips over your ankles/heels (you can press the tops of your feet into the floor, or tuck the toes under if you’d like to add a stretch through the soles of the feet), walk your hands forward as far as you feel comfortable 🐾

Reach forwards through the fingertips to create a bit of traction, and if your shoulders are tight, walk your hands out to the side a little rather than keeping your arms at shoulder width distance. You might potentially be able to bring your chest and forehead down onto the floor, but don’t overarch your upper back and just hang in there no matter how tempting it might be – keep the spine long guys, and make sure dat butt stays over the knees 🍑

Breathe deeply, and hold for anything from 30secs to up to a few minutes, depending on what feels right and how much time you got 🙇🏻‍♀️

There will be times when working on projecting a route that’s beyond my grade, I find myself caught up with frustrations, not getting past my crux after countless tries and unwavering efforts. .
That’s when all that time spent on the mat sharpening skills, inner strength, come to surface. Bringing back to clear vision of what really matters. .

This week vinyasa flow classes are focused on feet and hips. Weirdo! No, well think of the feet stabilising and grounding the lower half of the body, as well as creating lift and buoyancy, then think of the pelvis basin as the stabilizer for the upper body. If we loose arch in the foot, especially in the medial (inner arch) our knee can collapse in, off-setting our pelvis, twisting the sacrum and off setting the spine. It all starts in the foot (the foundation) our foot has 26 bones and 32 joints....WOWWWW. What a cool little machine that is!! In postures such as warrior 1, we are effectively creating a whole array of ROM (range of movement) in the feet whilst keeping the hips aligned. I've had a foot injury from climbing that effectivly tightened my hips, and postures such as down dog, all warriors and squats have brought the ROM and strength back into the foot, but mainly the hipzzzzzz.

It was amazing to be back teaching Yoga at Spokes @spokesofbagshot this morning can't believe we are coming up to 3 years since we set this community class up. Thank you for all the lovely feedback this week. I have always seen the benefits of Yoga practice for those who take part in a variety of sports and it is wonderful to offer this class so local. How does Yoga enhance training I hear you ask? Well one of the benefits is that the regular practice of yoga postures trains the muscles and tendons to stabilise the joints, which in turn helps those practicing to avoid both acute and repetitive-stress injuries. Making sure that you maintain awareness during your practice and sport, every day is different and we need to allow ourselves to connect back, rest when we need to, in order to maintain balance, strength and flexibility in body and mind. Sporting performance is not just about the physical but also the mental, and the challenges we experience on the mat, the intensity, overcoming fear, building resilience, determination etc helps us to deal with them when they come up in life and in our sport, it is a journey of constant learning. .

#15daysofprogress DAY 14 **backbend prep/accessory work** okay, quick recap - backbends require the upper back (thoracic spine) to bend backwards (extend). If the upper back is stiff, the lower back (lumbar spine) will likely be overrecruited - not good. Telltale sign - discomfort/pain during or after a backbend 🔥

Most backbends also engage the pecs, in yoga we often refer to this as ‘opening the chest’. So make sure you equally warm up the front of the body properly before any backbending sequence 🧐

Here’s a really simple one, personally I do this as part of pretty much any warm-up at the gym, particularly gymnastics (pull-ups, ring-dips, muscle-ups), lovely stretch for the pecs 😅

You can do this standing up or seated. Slightly engage the abs to make sure the ribs don’t pop up. Clasp your hands behind your back, bring the heels of the palms together if possible. Draw the shoulders down, they will likely want to hunch up. Now draw the upper arms back - if your pecs are tight (desk life) your shoulders will have a tendency to roll forward (internal rotation). Now squeeze your shoulder blades together and press your hands down towards the floor. PS - remember to keep breathing deeply ✌🏻

It was my pleasure today to work with the talented @mrmikaellawal for @teamsauerland and @stonebridgeboxingclub in prep for his upcoming fight this Saturday 14th in Germany 💪🏼 did you know that #yoga can compliment #boxing in a number of ways. #15days of progress DAY 11 – if you’ve been following me over the past 11 days, you’ll have noticed that I ended up not practising one particular asana, but rather, a bunch of postures related to the peak I chose, which is the wheel (urdhva dhanurasana). As well as a whole bunch of relevant accessory work and rehab exercises 🔥

I’m going to elaborate on all that a little more on the last day of the challenge, stay tuned 🔛

Today I’m going to show you a nice modification of upward-facing dog, my fitness fiends might recognise this as the finishing position of the divebomb push-up. But let’s not get hung up on names here 🤓Backbends should be initiated by tilting the pelvis backwards - your teacher might give you cues along the lines of ‘push your hips forward’ (sounds counter-intuitive, but this equals tilting the pelvis back, anyway that’s an anatomy lesson for another time) 🧐

Using blocks underneath the hands (dumbbells or even small kettlebells also work 💡) gives you a bit more space to correctly position the pelvis and pull the chest through the arms. Remember – shoulders back & down, chest up, and make those legs work! Super important here – active legs, squeeze dat butt and press down through the hands so as to not just hang in the shoulders and dump all the weight into your lower back. In our lunchtime club I always let the children pick a song to play to finish of their mindful session, today the song choice was unanimous “Three Lions”. We spoke about how yoga can help sports players and how the World Cup players will have to stay calm. We talked about the techniques they would use, and practised these whilst listening to the song.
