The last three postures of the ashtanga yoga practice are just as important and the Sun salutations in the beginning, and they are all in PADMASANA, Lotus Pose: BADDHA (locked, holding thumbs from back, flexing forward, Yoga Mudra , Uptluthih or Tolasana, hand balancing )
The intention of these postures is to complete the cleansing ritual of the ashtanga yoga practice and thus let turn the full attention of the mind inward.
This posture is the culmination of all the postures before. It tests your ability to sit still and strengthens your intention within the ashtanga yoga system. It is the gateway posture into deeper forms of pranayama and meditation practices.
In YOGA MUDRA , I slow down the breathing in Ujjay until I naturally effortlessly practice antara (inhale retention)and then bahia kumbhaka (exhale retention) for 30" each to actually start Pranayama and bring balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic system . This way I don' t feel tired from the practice nor excited. I feel calm , empty. And I don' t feel like needing Savasana as relaxing letting go pose, which did not even existed in traditional yoga practice. In fact Savasana was a tough corpse pose to impress the public.
