||Wheel Pose - Urdhva Dhanurasana ||
The first two pictures were taken when I was training for triathlons and lacking all the essential flexibility especially in shoulder mobility and hip flexors.
Below are some asanas to do before getting in the full wheel pose:
- puppy pose
- Low lunge
- Bridge
- Reclined hero
- Lizard
- Half pigeon
- Cobra.
🚫Tips and Cues:
Heels as close to the sitting bones as possible. Feet hip width apart and parallel.
Palms beside your head and push with your feet upwards. If you have tight armpits or groins (like me) practice on blocks placing them tilted on a wall with your palms on them and pushing upwards. This will help with alignment too.
Most importantly, work towards the bend from the thoracic part (mid back) not lower back. This still requires alot of work from my side and I tend to be more flexible in the lower back.

Yogi Step 2: Bend Right

After learning and practising to build a firm foundation through some of the standing poses, Yogi Step 2 is a 4-classes series on the correct techniques on how to bend right.
~
Forward bends made up some of the most fundamental asanas in the variety of yoga asanas. Hence, in Iyengar Yoga, a lot of emphases are placed upon performing forward bends in the correct way. We need to always be aware of our spine, our hips, thighs and hamstring when we are performing forward bends. Yogi Step 2 brings us to feel and explore these areas of our body.

At the end of each class, a daily yoga sequence will be given to encourage self-practice at home. Class notes will be provided.

Surya yantrasana ♥️ Also known as compass pose, this is one of my favorites for opening the shoulders, hamstrings, hips and stretching and strengthening the spine. When I teach this pose in class, we move through a series of poses to prepare the body - hamstring, hip and shoulder openers, lots of twists and lateral side body stretches. For those who have tight hamstrings or shoulders, even when significantly warmed up, this pose can be very challenging. .

A strap helps with both shoulder and hamstring tightness. The knee of the extended leg can be bent, no need to straighten and risk injury. Both sit bones should stay rooted down, and this can be tricky with tight shoulders and hamstrings. Sitting on a block aids tight hips and can also help with keeping both sit bones grounded. ♥️ .

Check out Judy’s stunningly beautiful expression of Hanumanasana pose! Utilizing props of blocks and blanket she is strong and steady just as this posture asks. Hanumanasana is a challenging pose and requires open hips, psoas and hamstrings.
This posture honors Hanuman, a Hindu deity who was incredibly devoted, faithful and made giant leaps (physically and otherwise) to show loyalty and love. You should check out his stories! He and Ganesh’s adventures are some of my favorites!
I’d say this is a perfect posture for Judy to be modeling as she continues to take leaps of faith and shows beautiful devotion to her practice. 🙏🏽❤️

This #evilshittodowithblocks move targets the entire shoulder girdle in many excellent ways, but today I’d like to focus on the good old rhomboids 😀

The rhomboids are the muscles that live in between your shoulder blades & your spine - you can think of them as being at the back of the heart.
. . .
Yesterday I shared a post about how the common prescription to “stretch the pecs & strengthen the rhomboids” is an incomplete picture, and we really ultimately want to be strengthening all of our muscles at all angles 💪🏼
. . .
And this video is a perfect example of this! Let’s picture those rhomboid muscles at the back of our heart. Can you see how when my arms are behind me and I touch the blocks together, my rhomboids are in a shortened position?
. . .
And then as I sweep my arms overhead, my rhomboids start to lengthen (i.e. stretch)? And throughout this entire range, my rhomboids are working & being strengthened?
. . .
That’s an example of strengthening through a full range! And it’s of course much more than just the rhomboids being affected here - I’m just pulling them out as an example for visualization.

We don’t need to think so much in terms of pairs of muscles, agonists & antagonists, stretching & strengthening as opposites, etc. Those are all 2D ways of looking at the body, when we are actually 3D organisms 👍🏼

Just strengthen all the stuff in all the ways, and you should pretty much have it covered! 😜 Of course there’s more nuance & context to all of this, but this is a good, general, big picture approach.

Parivrtta Ardha chandrasana or revolved half moon with the wall and a strap. Place a block under your bottom hand if you can’ reach the floor. Keep lengthening the legs into the floor and wall. Use the strap to create more stability and take the bend out of both knees. To the best of your capacity lengthen each arm away from each other. As a Type-A person with a Power Vinyasa practice (there are a lot of us), I rarely give myself space to take modifications and use props. BUT I must say it’s been wonderfully helpful to use blocks, bolster, and strap to keep my practice going. If you’re like me and you pride yourself on doing the “full expression” of every freaking pose in class, I have a couple of challenges for you: FIRST, take VERY modification offered in one class. The whole class. SECOND, use blocks every time they are cued in class. The whole class. What you’ll find is that there at least a handful of poses where you were compensating and self-limiting. Once you find better alignment and support for those poses, your practice might just get even more deep, more advanced, and more manageable than it was before. #yogaprops #yogablocks #humility #regresstoprogress .

Last day 🎉🎉🎉 This was really fun and kind of stress free challenge for me. It took me a day or two to completely let go of the idea that “I have to do something different to make the pose look better” and embrace the fact that it’s perfect as it is.
