Happy International Yoga Day 🧘‍♀️ and summer solstice 🌞

While these photos appear to fit the bill for today, they were actually taken last year, in Australia, where it was winter 🤷‍♀️. And today, in Santa Monica, it’s overcast, cloudy, and kinda chilly. Go figure. .
Anyway, I wanted to share my gratitude for the practice of yoga and share a little of my journey. I really fell in love with the physical aspect of yoga first. I was a young teen and my mum took me to a yoga/Pilates class (she has been doing yoga with me and @morgys since we were young, we just didn’t realise it) and by the time I was in high school, we were doing yoga and Pilates together regularly. Once at University, I threw myself wholeheartedly into the practice of yoga, and loved the physical strength, challenge, and quiet I felt during the practice. .
But I was really coming from a place of striving, of wanting the do the ‘perfect’ pose, and have the ‘perfect’ body, and ended up with a number of injuries. .
Then I was introduced to Iyengar yoga, which was much slower, and focused on alignment, than the flow style I had been practicing. Iyengar taught me to really feel and refine the base structure of the poses, and use the body as a way of accessing an internal state. This was a profound shift for me, by now in my early 20s. I dived into the practice of Iyengar, my hips and neck started working better, chronic injuries started to heal, and the connection with my inner world started to grow. .
Then, I was introduced to iRest yoga nidra by @drlaurentober which was a whole new way inside. Doing the yoga nidra teacher training gave me a map for accessing my inner world which I have been studying and exploring ever since. .
I still have a physical yoga practice, but how I practice has changed significantly since I began. I do some postures, but also do other forms of exercise that suit my body, and my main focus is shavasana, yoga nidra, and the inner world. .
I’m so grateful for this practice that has helped me shift from being trapped in perfectionistic and dissociative tendencies, to being able to inhabit my body, explore my inner world, {continued in comments}

My journey with yoga started when my late father gave me a book called Richard Hittleman's 28 Day Yoga Plan back when I was 13 years old. I followed the plan, practiced every single asana and was hooked. Since then yoga has been a part of my life. And everyday I learn something new. Yoga is not something you just do. It's a way of life. And I'm thankful to my dad for this gift. Happy Father's day papa, I miss you.

Remembering this lovely moment when I guided a lovely Yoga Nidra for a full house at the retreat center @shambala_gatherings about ten days ago. Except from the fact that Yoga idea really helps a lot of people there are 3 things I enjoy the most when guiding these classes.
• When you feel the energy switch and clearly most are becoming more relaxed after maybe 10 minutes, in my manuscript usually about the time I guide the scanning of the left leg.
• that this old beautiful technique from the ancient tantric school of yoga really works with the subtle levels.
• the look or body language of most when coming out from the Yoga Nidra, so special!
I am looking forward to teach Yoga Nidra again next semester and perhaps some extra class during summertime.

The practice of yogic sleep (yoga nidra) is quickly spreading through yoga studios. What was almost unheard of a few years ago, is blossoming at a time when calming one’s mind is very much needed. Though it may be new to the West, yoga nidra is an ancient practice in both #Buddhism and Hinduism. In an example from one Buddhist text, yoga nidra is described as a “peace beyond worlds” that is obtained from the guru's teachings. And from the beloved ancient Hindu text, the Mahābhārata, yoga nidra refers to Vishnu's sleep between the cycles of the universe called the yugas. These early references are not defining a specific technique or type of yoga, they are describing a state of enlightened transcendental sleep. In modern times, yoga nidra is a practice of lying on one’s back while allowing the consciousness to move into a deep state of relaxation. This is achieved by gently guiding the mind/body into the subtle awareness of sensations.✨

Why Do We Need the Practice of Yoga Nidra?
The negative effects of stress are everywhere. The increasing use of antidepressants, sleeping pills, and anxiety medications is overwhelming. People are looking for something to calm their minds, improve their mood, and bring them peace. Yoga nidra just may be the prescription. Nidra is a very accessible form of meditation, deeply relaxing and easily available to anyone looking to try it. If you shy away from studios, there are many videos and even apps you can get that will guide you through a private home practice. 
Students and clients often tell me they have difficulty meditating. "I just can't sit there and do nothing with my eyes closed," or "I try to meditate but my mind just won't slow down." These folks are perfect candidates for nidra.💡

We're constantly engaging in so many activities, mental & physical. There's always something to "think" or "overthink" about. Something to stress about. Not all thoughts are created equal // They say that drowsy driving is similar to drunk driving. In fact, if you’ve been awake for a full 24 hours and drive, it’s the equivalent of having a blood alcohol level of .10 (for comparison, .05 is considered drunk). With both drowsy and drunk driving, you’re ability to pay attention, make decisions and react are seriously impaired. .

We all know that the thoughts we think and act on when intoxicated are generally of a different quality than when we are clear headed. The same thing applies when we are tired or sleep deprived. .

So don’t make important decisions when sleep deprived. Or have important conversations. Or listen to any cognitive assessment about yourself when tired. Chances are, your thoughts are impaired. .

So what to do? Sleep on it! Everything looks different in the morning after a full nights sleep. .

Yoga nidra offers a space to explore what you need in the moment, as well as an opportunity to work on releasing long-held emotions. It can serve as a pathway to freedom without creating bodily stress, it’s a powerful mediation technique, and one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. This systematic meditation takes you through five layers of self, leaving you with a sense of wholeness.
🔶Anyone Can Do It
Yoga nidra is a practice that everyone, from children to seniors, can do. It's easy to follow at any age. All that your body needs to do is lie down on the floor. (Or seated)
🔶You Cannot Practice Incorrectly
As you lie down, supported in savasana, all you have to do is follow the voice that is guiding you. It's likely that you will remember certain parts of the meditation and not others. Every time you come to the practice you encounter a new experience, none of which is wrong. Falling asleep is okay too, as you will still receive benefits while the unconscious mind is absorbing the practice.
🔶Easy to Incorporate into Daily Life
Seated meditation can be frustrating sometimes —trying to clear the mind, bring awareness back to the breath, or find inspiration for focusing. Yoga nidra is always guided, so there is no intense thinking or wondering why you are staring at a blank wall. A yoga nidra practice can be as short as five minutes and as long as an hour.
