Burning tree, dropped as a hazard at the Ferguson Fire off Glacier Point Rd near the intersection with Highway 41 in Yosemite National Park. Large logs will burn for days as the pitch and dense fuels slowly are consumed from the inside. From the ground this log looked like a chimney on it’s side, putting out puffs of smoke intermittently. On closer inspection, looking into the 4-foot wide chasm of the tree’s cross section, was a blast furnace of heat and hot gases coming from the side. Even in full PPE, helmet, and shroud, the heat was intense enough that I couldn’t get much closer than a few feet. Overall the Western Sierra Nevada mountains are in poor health at mid-elevations, suffering from a combination of drought and bark beetle kill, causing many trees to be a danger both to firefighters and civilians alike. It certainly kept your head on a swivel.
