Sometimes I feel like the character, May, in 'The Secret Life of Bees', who felt things so, so deeply. There's just such bulging, oozing, raw pain surrounding us all. Daily, we see it. We feel it. And then, there's the attempt to drain off some of the pain by groups endlessly pointing fingers at other groups.... people against people, using blame as a siphon.
I know I'm not alone in this shared cumulative grief. So, with you, I lift my feeble whispers and deep groans Heavenward today. We join countless others, praying for our country. May we put down our weapons, our words of hate, our predisposed judgements and pet issues. May we truly 'turn' and 'humble ourselves.' May our Creator have mercy. May comfort come to those who mourn. May healing spread and hope come again.
Anyone who knows me IRL knows that I STRUGGLE with being on time. For any and every thing. One thing I'm loving these days (aside from @batiste_us dry shampoo) is this #5minuteface from @beautycounterbywhitneyray It really does only require 5 minutes - It's not a marketing ploy! In addition to a natural looking finish, it's yuck free - no hormone disrupters (I need all the help I can get in this area these days), AND any purchase made during the September social will go towards #hurricaneharvey recovery efforts in my consultant, Whitney's hometown of #Houston Its super easy to pick your colors (@beautycounter guides the best complementary shades once you pick your foundation/tint skin base). There's also an easy to follow guide for application of all the things so you finish looking like naturally beautiful YOU (only a little bit better). I use the bronzer from the cheek palette for eye shadow so I have all I need for a full face shown here. (The counter match moisturizer and rose water were separate purchases.) Do yourself a favor and head over to http://www.beautycounter.com/whitneyray/social/259932-September+Social to get YOUR 5 minute face and all of her commission goes to help make #houstonstrong (this is not a sponsored post)
What a night of inspiration and hope @clothedinhope 's #cihgalaforhope in #raleigh this evening. We were all called by Founder Amy Bartee to bring our 5 loaves and 2 small fish to be multiplied while in country Zambian director Elina reminded us all "when you empower a woman, you empower a nation" If you've never heard of Clothed in Hope, please check them out! They're a #nonprofit that offers micro lending and skills training to over 200 women in Zambia and have some cute products along with opportunities for monthly sponsorships, etc.
No wonder @colorsalonandspa just won top knods from @caryliving magazine as the best salon for cut and color!! I left from my session with Val feeling a little extra today. I haven't had bangs since I don't know when... but she painted the picture for me and coached me how to style them. (Here's to hoping I don't rue them tomorrow!) She also took my natural blonde from blah to bam! It's super shiney and super soft. I'm feeling a date night coming on! 💃🏼
I owe some awesome people some thank you notes after our epic 2 week family road trip. We stayed with family and friends and family of a friend in one case. Everyone was so generous with their time and homes and especially their love. ❤ Shout out to my girl Heather @thoughtfilled for whipping up some custom stationary to encourage me to get these out! #thoughtfilled#giftsthatcount
It's #worldelephantday an international annual event dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants. I saw these majestic creatures in the wild last year while in Uganda and have tried to learn so much more about them and their plight. African elephants are on the vulnerable population list thanks primarily to poaching for their ivory tusks. I just heard yesterday that we lose approximately 35,000 elephants a year and at that rate, they could be extinct in 10 years. I'll be honest, I cried when I heard that statistic. I've learned too much about the gift of empathy these creatures possess, their complex grieving behaviors, their strong social networks, to accept that they could go extinct on our watch. For any purchase made from @noondaycollection Fall line through my website, I will donate 10% of the purchase price to @worldelephantday and for any purchase from the Uganda pieces, I'll donate 20% of purchase price. #shopwithpurpose and help #savetheelephants 🐘🐘🐘 http://brandimendenhall.noondaycollection.com (link in profile)

Summers are for reading... we've made some strict deals with the kids that are directly correlated to reading logs. The plus is that I get to read too! I received an advance copy of #ChurchOfTheSmallThings - the newest book from @melanieshankle You know you've found a good book when the intro goes in to the Bible story of the boy with 5 loaves and 2 fish - only it's not about the boy, or even Jesus really, but the boy's mama. About her faithfulness and diligence in doing the small and simple thing of packing her kid's lunch. How life isn't about the glamorous things - the "instagram worthy" moments - but about the smallest most ordinary acts of daily faithfulness. "We can spend so much time wondering and worrying if we're fulfilling God's primary will for our lives. Yet, ultimately, God's will isn't about the things we achieve; it's about the people we become." This book is an easy read (quick, engaging chapters and hilarious recollections that are so relatable). If you need a little affirmation about the simple things and assurance that your IG feed or Facebook reel doesn't have to appear that you're living an epic adventure of a life, you can pre-order this ebook today at all major online retailers for only $4.99. (Today only)
What a joy and privilege to have #localartist @eleattadiver spend a week with my kids!! These three dimensional casts were the pièce de résistance of the week. She patiently walked them through each step of the way over 5 days to create lasting art. (Samuel is planning to pass his lion down for generations! 😂) I highly recommend her #artcamp for kids - she also does adult camps, classes, team building, etc and commissioned pieces.
If "deep calls to deep" Eleatta is an artist who calls to the inner artist within each person, no matter whether they "feel" artsy or not, and helps them create beyond their expectation. www.eleatta.com #durhamart#supportlocal#art
It's #worldfairtradeday today and #mothersday tomorrow. I've been reflecting on the power of #fairtrade in the lives of Mothers around the world. #fairwages means full bellies, kids in school, access to healthcare and housing. #fairhours means that mama's get to work and be home with their families. #fairtreatment means that women are valued in their communities, often overcoming patriarchal systems, abusive relationships, sexual abuse and on and on and on. #fairtrade should be celebrated the whole world over EVERY day. If we can all live in that space of loving our neighbors as ourselves; helping to create opportunities for every mother to have access to jobs that provide for what we'd want for our own mothers, sisters, daughters, friends - what a wonderful world that would be. Your purchasing dollars matter and so do your choices. Shop wisely! Some of my favorites are: @noondaycollection (link for WFT day sale in profile!) @mangoandmain @theflourishmarket @oneworldmarket @matatraders @tenthousandvillages (📷 credit) @indigenousdesigns @therootcollective @teysha_world @zuricollection_ You can trust that using your purchasing dollars at any of these shops are empowering women and creating change in communities around the world! 👊🏼
