"So large is a Steller's sea eagle," writes @jonathanslaght on #WCSWildView, "that occasionally, on a frozen bay, one of these birds can be mistaken for the hunched form of an ice fisherman." Still, in the coastal forests of Primorye, Russia, Slaght says, these big birds have proven to be no match for Amur tigers. Get the full story on the blog.

Here, rescued African grey parrots are released back into the wild. A team from @TheWCS recently traveled to Congo to advise @wcs_congo staff as they rehabilitate these birds. You’ll recall, criminal trafficking networks are supplying the illegal pet trade by emptying forests across West and Central Africa of the parrots. When they’re captured, the birds undergo unthinkable stress. So it's very rewarding for the team to see confiscated birds flying free again, as 31 recently did. Great news! With The Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration, Wildlife Reserves Singapore, and @turtlesurvival, we've just released 25 southern river terrapins, also known as royal turtles, into the wild in Cambodia. The species, Cambodia's National Reptile, is among the world’s most endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles. It lives only in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, and its global wild population numbers less than 500 mature individuals.

African grey parrots undergo unthinkable stress when they are captured from the wild to supply the illegal pet trade. Only 1 in 20 survive. "When we receive parrots seized from poachers," says Alain Ondzie of the WCS Wildlife Health Program, who is on the ground in Congo, "they arrive at our rehabilitation center in tiny cages and there are many parrots packed into each cage." You can join our team in helping these birds, seen here after being rescued. Click the link in our bio for more.

The effects of a changing climate are often on clear display to the @arcticwcs team—like walrus, short on sea ice, crowded on remote shorelines by the tens of thousands. Our researchers are also monitoring less visible changes, including the level of underwater noise and the serious threat it poses to marine mammals, which often rely on sound to survive. In their most recent research, the team finds that some ships can likely be heard by these animals from over 60 miles away.

It's National Bison Day! @TheWCS has a long history of helping to conserve America's National Mammal. In June, WCS's Kelly Stoner (@kellyjoys) attended the Blackfeet Nation’s Bison Drive, helping to move the tribe’s commercial bison herd across the reservation from winter to summer pastures. Here, wranglers and guests on that drive ride out to meet the herd. In addition to this commercial herd, WCS’s Bison Program is currently collaborating with the Blackfeet Tribe to establish another, free-ranging bison herd on the reservation. Returning bison to Blackfeet country will help restore the spectacular Crown of the Continent ecosystem, reconnect Blackfeet youth with their ancient culture, and provide nature-based economic opportunities (like the Bison Drive ecotour) for the Blackfeet people.

In honor of National Bison Day tomorrow, we thought we'd follow up on the story of Sparky the bison. In 2013, you may recall, Sparky, a male in the Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge in Iowa, was struck by lightning. The folks from the @usfws feared he wouldn't survive. But Sparky proved resilient. Prior to the incident, Sparky had fathered three calves. Since then, though, Sparky hasn't fathered any, genetic testing has shown. But the USFWS reports that sparks may be flying. This summer, he was seen hanging out regularly with the same female bison. She would hang back with him and saunter at his pace. Get the full scoop on #WCSWildView.

Wild African grey parrots are disappearing from West and Central Africa. In Ghana, populations are estimated to have declined by 90-99 percent. In parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, and Republic of Congo, the birds have all but disappeared. Where have they gone? Criminal trafficking networks are taking them to supply the illegal pet trade. But the experience of being captured and smuggled is highly stressful. Only 1 in 20 of them survive it. We need to protect African grey parrots before it's too late. Speak out via the link in our bio.

They're intelligent and highly social. And their ability to mimic all kinds of sounds, even human speech, has made African grey parrots hugely popular as pets. But their appeal to humans is now threatening their survival in the wild. Criminal trafficking networks supplying the pet trade are emptying forests across West and Central Africa. With a loud voice right now, we can make sure governments do the right thing and protect these birds. Speak out with us via the link in our bio.

Tens of millions of bison once roamed the Plains, but the animal’s numbers had dropped precipitously by the turn of the 20th century. Fewer than 1,100 were left. “It would be a real misfortune to let the species go extinct,” President Theodore Roosevelt wrote in 1907. Luckily, bison survived thanks to the herculean efforts of a broad coalition of supporters. Last year, the bison was named our National Mammal. Today, it needs our help again. Via the link in our bio, urge the Senate to make National Bison Day a reality. It is important to honor this iconic animal.

It's International Snow Leopard Day! Recently, these big cats were upgraded from “endangered” to “vulnerable.” Still, scientists are urging caution. While efforts to protect these animals are helping, snow leopards, like this one caught on a camera trap in Afghanistan, still face serious dangers, including poaching for their thick fur and the overhunting of their wild prey.

The Burmese star tortoise nearly went extinct. Popular with pet traders, the medium-sized tortoise with a distinct pattern on its shell was almost erased from the wild in the early 2000s. With a team of conservationists and government partners, our colleagues in Myanmar have conducted an aggressive captive-breeding program to bring it back. Thanks to that effort, the Burmese star tortoise population has reached over 14,000 individuals. Watch the video at wcs.org.

In the @NYTimes today, our own Martin Robards and George Schaller weigh in on the need to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Republicans are using the budget reconciliation process to allow oil drilling there in order to generate revenue to offset the cost of tax reform. But, as Robards and Schaller write, it's time to draw a line in the tundra. "The Arctic refuge must continue to be preserved as a symbol of America’s natural heritage. It remains a healthy ecosystem supporting wildlife, and native peoples as they adapt to profound climate-related changes." Speak out with them via the link in our bio.

Nearly 60 years ago, renowned @TheWCS conservationist George Schaller became among the first to survey the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He came back with amazing photos, like this one, and his expedition's findings convinced the U.S. Department of Interior to protect the dramatic landscape. Today, it remains one of America's last wild places. Denning polar bears, majestic caribou herds, tons of migratory birds, and more reside there. But Congress is poised to open the door to oil and gas exploration and development, potentially causing widespread, long-term damage to the refuge. Tell them this cannot happen via the link in our bio.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of America’s last pristine wild places, home to caribou, polar bears, wolverines, musk oxen, and over 200 species of migratory birds. Right now it's in danger, though. Congress is considering a budget resolution that would open the door to damaging oil and gas exploration. If it succeeds, this vital landscape could be permanently damaged. Tell your senators to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge via the link in our bio!

Acrobatic dusky dolphins are a sight to see on the open ocean. @TheWCS researcher Claudio Campagna describes their Olympic-style gymnastics, which often occur during coordinated feeding, on #WCSWildView. According to Campagna, a group of more than 100 dolphins will work together to circle a school of anchovies and push the fish to the surface. Get the full scoop on the blog.

This is one of 50 sarus crane chicks that recently hatched from 27 nests in the Northern Plains of Cambodia. Sarus cranes are the tallest flying birds. They can reach over five-feet tall. And they're vulnerable. The global population numbers around 10,000, of which 500 individuals live in Cambodia. WCS and the Ministry of Environment employ local community members there to protect the nests of these birds.

On a recent trip to Botswana and Zimbabwe, WCS's Bricken Sparacino found herself mesmerized watching this young elephant play with a log. "He tried to pick it up with his tiny trunk," recalls Sparacino. "He flapped his ears at the log to intimidate it. He stood on it and stomped. The log broke and made a loud cracking noise. He jumped back, looked around as if he was seeing if anyone had noticed, and then played it cool, and went back to intimidating the log." Get the full, endearing story on #WCSWildView.
