Happy International Day of Forests! Today’s global celebration is meant to raise awareness of the many ways trees sustain and protect us. One of those many benefits of trees is their ability to store carbon – which helps mitigate the impacts of climate change. Here is one of our favorite forests, the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park, Washington. And speaking of a place that receives a lot of rain, we should also note that trees protect important watersheds – and help prevent flooding.

Photo @stephen_matera // Balsamroot at sunset, Tom McCall Preserve at Rowena Crest, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Tom McCall Preserve comes alive every spring with the spectacular wildflower bloom. Rowena Crest is in the transition zone between the moist west side of the Cascades and drier mountains and prairies of eastern Oregon. Catch it at the right time, usually early May, and you can get the blues and purples of lupine and yellows of the balsamroot together. Follow me @stephen_matera for more images like this from Oregon and around the world. #rowenacrest #columbiariver #gorge

[ #BreakingBarriers ] The Eagle | Photograph by Audrey Jeane Edler (@audreyjeane)

#YourShotPhotographer Audrey Jeane Edler writes, ‘Damel is a young Kazakh girl learning to hunt with the eagle. Traditionally, this role was passed from father to son. Damel is one of a handful of girls now carrying on this tradition. She bonds with her eagle daily, learning the proper way to feed, handle, and care for the bird. In Northwestern Mongolia, the eagle is not just a pet, it’s part of their cultural tradition where they are trained to hunt foxes, wolves, and rabbits for the family.’
This photo is powerful in many ways. Audrey not only made a thoughtful portrait of a young woman and her eagle, in the caption she educates her audience about how important eagles are to Mongolian culture. Another layer of education comes when she informs us that usually sons carry on the tradition of caring for eagles but Damel is one very few girls carrying on the tradition.
Photography isn’t just about capturing the right moment, but finding the moments that can delight and educate.”— @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)

Hello, world! It’s time for a very special edition of #WeeklyFluff. Meet Rexie (@rexiecat), the 3-year-old “handicat” who harnesses his #cattitude every day. “Despite lacking the ability to use his rear end due to an injury, Rexie by no means lets it slow him down,” explains Rexie’s human, Dasha. “Even if he has to use only his two feet to walk, he still manages to move around very easily, and he actually runs pretty fast!”

Sudan, the last male white rhino on Earth, passed away yesterday at his home in Kenya. Photographer @amivitale was there after covering Sudan for many years. Vitale - "With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Zachariah Mutai comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF. Support this important work:"
