Photo by @PaulNicklen | British Columbia is home to the largest intact temperate rainforest, which provides a lush and abundant habitat for a variety of fish, bird, mammal, and plant species; some of which are exclusive to the region. We must work hard to protect the array of life here. To give nature the chance to maintain its own unique and fragile ecosystems and not to face insurmountable human pressures. #FollowMe at @PaulNicklen for more photos and stories from Canada’s west coast. #BritishColumbia #rainforest #conservation #biodiversity

Winter’s Fire | Photograph by Sangeeta Dey
Shortly after a snowfall, #YourShotPhotographer Sangeeta Dey got an opportune photograph at Horsetail Falls in Yosemite National Park. "Every year for a few days in February," she says, "the sun sets at a certain angle and illuminates the waterfall in luminescent orange and red, making it look like a molten lava."

Today we are featuring @natgeoyourshot photographs selected for @natgeo “Photo of the Day.” To see more, go to natgeo.com/pod.

Photo by David Guttenfelder @dguttenfelder | Portraits of the late leaders of North Korea, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, hang above frilly cloth-covered pianos at Pyongyang Kyongsang Kindergarten. Across the country, images, pins, mosaics, and monuments of the two late leaders, who died in 1994 and 2011, are ubiquitous. Please follow me, @dguttenfelder, for an inside look at North Korea, where I have been traveling and photographing for the past 19 years.

Standing on a beach, staring at the sea. Here’s a couple more from my time in Newfoundland last week - bonus points if you know the reference I blatantly stole for the caption 😂😂

We hit the hills outside of Kathmandu for a half-day hike to the town Panauti. .

Although this route through villages and terraced fields has been used by locals for ages, it has only recently been developed for travelers by @gadventures and their local partner @communityhomestaynetwork. The goal: to be more inclusive of those communities which previously hadn’t benefited from tourism in the region. .

The final destination of this 10km day hike: Panauti, a charming little town known for its temples and as one of the Kathmandu Valley @UNESCO sites. Until a few years ago, visitors day tripped to Panauti without delivering much revenue or benefit to the local community. .

A G Adventures tour leader (CEO) from Panauti saw potential in his hometown and a way for his community to benefit in a sustainable way from tourism. That is how the @planeterracares Panauti Homestay project was born. Its focus: the training and economic empowerment of local women. Today, there are 20 families in Panauti welcoming G Adventures travelers who spend anywhere from an overnight up to four days with them - living, cooking and learning together. .

We had an opportunity to join Ssarmila in her home and cook a traditional Nepali meal together. As she explained, it’s not only the women and families directly involved in the homestay program who benefit from additional income. Local farmers and businesses also benefit since food and other supplies are sourced locally. .

These days, travelers can now remember the warmth, interaction and delicious food which all form the experience at the Panauti homestay — more than the temples for which the town had been famous. .
