Bangladesh, Dhaka.
Sanjida Sahajahan, 11, was a healthy toddler when the common bacterium pneumococcus devastated her brain. When I met her last year, she couldn’t talk, couldn't walk and couldn’t eat alone. She wasn’t vaccinated for pneumonia because developing countries didn’t have the PCV vaccine when she was a kid. It is only in 2015 that Bangladesh started to use the PCV vaccines. This picture was published as part of the story « Why vaccines matter » in the Novembre issue of tte magazine.

“Miracles are hidden on the coast of the Barents Sea, you just have to want to see them,” writes Your Shot photographer Sergey Korolev. “This eye I found wandering along the rocky coast of the Barents Sea in the vicinity of Teriberka. In fact, this is a puddle, that was a half a meter deep and a meter in diameter. Microorganisms living on its bottom, tried to make shapes similar to an eye.” This image was selected for the January 12, 2018 Daily Dozen by Your Shot Producer Matt Adams (@themattadams).

Top Shot features the photo with the most votes from the previous day’s Daily Dozen, 12 photos chosen by the Your Shot editors from thousands of recent uploads. Words by Justin Kavanagh. “This intriguing avenue of 18th century beech trees, known as the #DarkHedges, is now legendary among watchers of HBO’s #GameofThrones, a story set in medieval times. Ireland’s landscapes, like its people, adapt well, and are constantly being reinvented as another time, another place. In ancient times Ireland’s stories were told by saints and scholars, who left a rich legacy of myths and mysteries; in recent times, filmmakers and digital storytellers have used the island’s dramatic landscapes and dreamscapes to forge new narratives that now attract travelers from far and wide.” For more images of scenic #Ireland, please follow @jeffmauritzen.

In Ken McFarlane’s (@365ken) portrait work, two common threads weave through: strength and dignity. “What is often highlighted in our communities is not necessarily the only thing, the best thing or the things that we know to be true,” says the photographer, based in Philadelphia. Reclaiming representations of the black community is important to Ken. “I believe in giving agency or utilizing our own agency in reflecting ourselves in the larger sense,” he explains. “What Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others sacrificed allows me to have the mindset and the perspective that I have. My goal is really to open new windows of opportunity so that new heroes and heroines can be known.”
This post is in honor of #MLKDAY in the United States. Watch our story to see more from Ken.
