Discover #YuHong's painting series "Witness to Growth" (1999– ), which pairs China’s social development with the growth of her daughter. “Against the backdrop of a nation-state’s grand narrative,” she says, “the quotidian details of our tiny individual lives are all the more important.” See her work on view in #ArtandChina through January 7. #Guggenheim
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim building has long inspired designers and visual artists to reinterpret its distinctive shape. Our museum has been the subject of artworks, has had cameos on @NewYorkermag covers—it was even reimagined as a tea set! The tea set beautifully evoked the museum's modern lines and architecture and was offered at the Guggenheim Store in the early 1990s, but was discontinued. The set is once again available thanks to our retail team who was able produce new molds for the set based on its original designs from our archives. Purchase your set at guggenheimstore.org/1959_modern. #Guggenheim#GuggenheimStore
"To be a surrealist means barring from your mind all remembrance of what you have seen, and being always on the lookout for what has never been."—René Magritte, born today in 1898. In "Empire of Light" (1953-54), Magritte creates a bizarre subject by combining day and night upsetting a fundamental organizing premise of life, yet typical of veristic Surrealist painting and preferred by the artist since the mid-1920s. #Guggenheim

"Exploring Guggenheim's interior was quite something, but it was its external architecture against the backdrop of a clear blue sky that I found mesmerizing. What a wonderful place!"—Visitor Rowena #FrankLloydWrightFridays

In Frank Lloyd Wright’s design for the museum, the ethereal atrium and spiraling rotunda truly embody sculptor Constantin #Brancusi’s assertion that “architecture is inhabited sculpture.” Brancusi's desire to activate his work through a process of physical interaction in real space led him reject conventional museum pedestals, and instead, he placed his works directly on the floor or constructed his own bases. See six of his six sculptural units on view now in "Guggenheim Collection: Brancusi."

“Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment."—Claude Monet, born on this day in 1840. Currently on view in our Thannhauser Collection, Monet's “The Palazzo Ducale, Seen from San Giorgio Maggiore” (1908), evokes his views of Venice and his exploration of “truthfulness” of the spontaneous nature. Along with his mastery in depicting colors and atmosphere, Monet returned to basic materials—stones, light, water, mist—each interacting with the other to produce a mosaic of suffused iridescent hues and to capture the fleeting light of Venice that saturate the entire surface of the canvas. #GuggenheimCollection#ThannhauserCollection#Guggenheim#ClaudeMonet

From our archives—never-seen-before photos of @museoguggenheim taken in 1997 by our Chief Photographer David Heald, on his first visit to Bilbao, Spain after the museum opened. "These were all shot in the pre-digital era with a 4x5” view camera. I was exploring the way in which Frank Gehry’s design was related to and bisected by the bridge. It was the practice then to shoot a black and white polaroid before exposing color film in order to check the composition, lighting, and exposure. I rediscovered them in our archive and saw how beautifully they had aged. They have the real-world equivalent of an '@Instagram filter'."—David #TBT

“During that transitional moment in the economy, everything was designed to look ostentatious.”—#XuTan, via @newyorkermag. "Made in China" (1997-98, reconstructed 2016) was originally produced amidst the unprecedented pace of development in Guangzhou and the surrounding region. Using cheap, often discarded industrial and consumer materials, Xu Tan’s work critiques and revels in the disorder produced by urbanization, dislocation, and waste. Swipe left to view photos of Xu Tan installing his work in the museum's rotunda for #ArtandChina.
