The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ajanta in #India contains thirty carved Buddhist caves overlooking a scenic gorge. The caves include paintings and sculptures depicting Buddha's life as well as his previous lives and are described as the finest surviving examples of Indian art. 'One of the #Atacama’s most popular attractions is a dawn excursion to the atmospheric El Tatio Geysers (the largest geo-thermal field in the Southern Hemisphere). I woke up in the dark of night to embark on a two-hour drive north of the dusty-pink adobe town San Pedro de Atacama. It’s freezing cold and the geysers are situated at a dizzying 4,200m above sea level. The heat from the gurgling geysers hits the crisp morning air, creating an ethereal mist that looms across the landscape, illuminated by the sun’s first rays. This is one of #Chile’s most magical sights.' – @portmanteau_press -- That's a wrap for this weekend's #lpinstatakeover! Check out @portmanteau_press for more of Eddie's shots!
'My time spent in the #Atacama felt incredibly surreal. We hiked a valley scattered with towering, 900-year-old cacti. It was a real Alice in Wonderland kind of experience, wandering around cacti that are several times my own height. The cacti grow about 1cm per year, so many of these monolithic plants have been standing here for almost a millennium! – @portmanteau_press#Chile#lpinstatakeover
'The #Atacama Desert is a land of extremity. Some parts only receive 1mm of rain each year, making it one of the driest places on earth. From the wind-sculpted geological formations, to emerald coloured Altiplanic lagoons, and the stretches of salt crystals that give off the appearance of a dusting of snow... I found so much beauty in this vast, unforgiving environment.' – @portmanteau_press#Chile#lpinstatakeover
'On my first day exploring the #Atacama Desert I was eager to spot the candy-coloured Andean flamingos. These are some of the rarest birds in the world. The flamingos flock to the lagoons, spread across the sparkling salt flats, where they feed on algae and vascular plants. The vibrant colours of the Salar de Atacama’s unique terrain must be seen to be believed.' – @portmanteau_press#Chile#lpinstatakeover
This weekend's #lpinstatakeover comes from Sydney based #travel blogger and #lppathfinders member, Eddie of @portmanteau_press, who will be sharing images from her recent trip to #Chile's otherworldly #Atacama Desert. – 'Chile is the longest, narrowest country in the world. I recently travelled from north to south exploring the country’s dramatic, ever-shifting scenery. In northern Chile, near the Bolivian border, you’ll find the world’s driest, non-polar desert – the Atacama. I was enchanted by the strange lunar landscapes that make you feel like you’re on another planet entirely. A highlight of any Atacama Desert adventure is watching the sunset over the ‘Valley of the Moon’, where pink-painted skies are set against a backdrop of rippling earth and smouldering volcanoes.' – @portmanteau_press -- Stay tuned this weekend for more of Eddie's snaps!
This week's #lonelyplanet regram is by Sandra (@sandiiyyy) taken at the 10,000 Buddhas Monastery in Pai Tau Village, Hong Kong. Some 12,800 miniature statues line the walls of the main temple and dozens of life-sized golden statues of Buddha’s followers flank the steep steps leading to the complex. This hopelessly charming street was snapped by #LonelyPlanet writer @nomaditis on a recent trip to #Greece. – 'Nafplio, Greece’s first capital, is one of those places where you can happily wander... and wander... and before you know it, a morning or afternoon has passed. Venetian buildings, kid-filled plazas, sea views and lines of cafes...' – @nomaditis 🇬🇷
